The Andalucia region

Mojacar is said to have a perfect climate and boasts the best all-year-round weather in the whole of Spain. Bordering the Tabernas Desert and warmed by the Mediterranean Sea, Almeria enjoys average summer temperatures of 25°C, endless cloudless days and up to 320 days of sunshine every year.

No wonder they call it the valley of the sun!

Winter is practically non-existent. It passes as if it were Spring with the sea temperature higher than that on land. Protected by the towering Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Mojacar region is an ideal destination to escape the British winter. With average winter temperatures of 12°C and little rainfall the weather is typical of an English summer day

Mojácar’s special climate makes the winters appear very mild in comparison with the rest of the South. The long luminous days of sunshine lend themselves perfectly to a beautiful winter break.

As for the summer, evenings here are just made for a relaxing moonlight stroll along the beach.

Almeria city is approximately 1 hours drive south from Garrucha and quite unique in so much that it is half Spanish and half African with many of the local workers being of African origin.

It is a pleasant and largely modern cosmopolitan city that hosts a major port, providing a ferry service to Africa, a sports marina and a working fishing port.

Vera Playa

The white village of Mojacar can be seen in the distance and is well worth a visit - it is said that Walt Disney was born here!!

A little further down the coast is Cabo de Gata national park, with some amazing land and sea views, and a wonderful diving site. Villaricos has 2 PADI dive centres and offers crystal clear waters and an abundance of undersea wildlife.

4 top-class gold courses are within 15 minutes drive away - The famous Desert Springs, Valle del Este, Marina Golf and Cortijo Grande.

And if all that's not enough for you the Sierra Nevada mountain range is just over a 2 hour drive away offering some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Europe. Granada and its Alhambra Palace are well worth a visit too.

Almería is the warmest and driest region in Europe with an average annual temperature of 19 C. Tabernas is located 24 kilometres from Almeria and is situated in the only desert in Europe. Summer temperatures can reach 45C.

Tabernas was used for the production of spaghetti westerns and various film sets built into the desert have been transformed into three theme parks, the best known of which is Mini Hollywood. More than 100 films were shot here, including A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

In Tabernas/ Mini Hollywood there is a daily mock bank hold-up and shootout staged at 12 and 5pm. There is a small zoo with lions, elephants, giraffes, brown bears, etc. There is also a swimming pool, cafe/restaurant and children's playground. Nearby is Texas Hollywood which was also used as a set and has a Western town, fort, Mexican pueblo and Indian tepees.

The coast of Almeria offers a wide variety of sporting activities. Water enthusiasts can enjoy diving in the crystal clear sea beds of the bays around the Cabo de Gata National park, water skiing, windsurfing or sailing. Other activities include walking in the mountains, cycling, horse riding and exploration of caves. This area has many unspoilt beaches and secluded coves for visitors to enjoy.

Sierra Nevada ski resort is only 2.5 hours drive away from the resort. It is reasonably priced and because of its altitude has a long season opening at the end of November and closing at the end of April.Garrucha — Picturesque fishing port with blue flag beaches and a nightly outdoor market in high season.

Mini Hollywood — let the kids be Clint Eastwood for the day! Great day out where you can wander round a real wild west town (and get thrown out of the tavern!) ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ was filmed here.

Aquapark — Perfect fun-filled family day out. Visit the website for more details and a handy discount voucher!

Yesos De Sorbas Caves — unique underground complex with magnificent caverns and galleries

Almeria City — Dominated by the ‘Alcazaba’ a huge Moorish Citadel dating from 995AD. Almeria’s old town is a delight to explore with tranquil squares, archways and colonnades.

Golf Courses — Courses to suit all abilities are in the area including the famous Desert Springs, Valle del Este, Club Marina.

And the Sierra Nevada Mountain range is only a couple of hours away if you fancy some skiing.

There are plenty of things going on in the area. Fiestas are a regular occurence, the main ones being:

Three Kings

Fiesta de Los Reyes. This is the moment when the three kings of Orient bring their Christmas presents to the children, on the evening of the 5th of January. Three men dress up as the kings, one with a black face, and ride about the town in a procession, scattering sweets to the crowds of excited children. The 6th of January is the public holiday in all Spain.

Easter or Holy Week

The Easter week processions compete with one another in luxury and splendour. The parades leave each of the town´s churches to wind slowly around the streets, with their lifelike statues of Christ on the Cross and his mother the Virgin Mary in mourning.

The processions take place during the week leading up to Easter Sunday. (23 March 2008, 12 April 2009, 4 April 2010). The best days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Saturday. Easter Sunday itself has less intensity generally.

Moors & Christians

This festival takes place in Mid-June and lasts for 3 days and is definitely a spectacle worth seeing.

The origins are obviously the battles following the re-conquest on the XVI and XVII century. The usual format for the fiesta is first a procession of the Moors and the Christians, then a theatrical enactment of verbal attacks and rejections by both groups, a battle enactment with skirmishes and dances, the conversion or the death of the moors, and finally homage to the patron saint.

Local Markets

These are generally open from 9am till 2pm and are a great place to get your souvenirs.

Mojacar is on Wednesday and Sunday, and Vera is on a Friday.

During the high season Garrucha has a nightly outdoor market on the promenade selling a variety of goods - well worth a look just to savour the atmosphere and watch the twinkling lights reflecting in the water.
