BookThe Costa de Almeria region
The area of Almeria has the highest sunshine ratio in Spain and also the lowest rainfall in Spain, many areas are classified as semi desert and near Almeria there is Europe's only desert at Tabernas. Which has now become a well known tourist attraction after being used for several years for filming spagetti Westerns, many well known films were shot there including The Good the Bad and the ugly.
This whole area is very mountainous with the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada being just two hours drive away. Which are well known for skiing in the winter months and also known for The Alhambra Palace which is an ancient Moorish citadel with stunning vistas and surrounded with beautiful gardens too. It's a wonderful place to visit but its not possible to just turn up but tickets have to be booked and it takes a good day to see it all. Much of the Alhambra was in poor repair and near derelict until it was restored. Now it is listed as one of the top 10 most visited places in the world.
The Vera Playa / Vera Coast Urbanizacion area
Vera town is situated just a few minutes drive away and has a weekly market and several old churches its well worth a visit.
Vera Playa has fast become a very popular resort but has not lost its original charm with a well kept beach and fresh water lagoon. There are weekly flamenco displays near the beach in the summer months, and often in the summer the classic car collectors club meet alongside the beach.
There is a walkway to the old fishing port of Garrucha , where you can see the fish market and the boats coming in daily. The beach bars and Restaurants offer a wide variety of foods
Within 30 minutes drive away are the caves at Sorbas which are an interesting place to see.
There is a Saturday market in Vera town.
The San Cleofas Fiesta is 25th September and Virgen de las Huertas end of September in Vera.

We spent a wonderful week here soaking up the sun. Communication with the Goodyears was quick and efficient, nice to do business! The apartment had absolutely everything we needed, including beach towels, mats and a parasol, and was spotless. Not sure about internet in the apartment, but there was a 'hotspot' outside reception. It had a balcony at the front overlooking the lovely, pristine pool which is shady (and quiet) for breakfast and a second at the back overlooking a lovely cool green walkway which was shady in the afternoon. The aircon worked mainly in the lounge but kept a level temperature at night and there were fans in both rooms. Everything here was in walking distance. The beautiful beach goes on for miles and you can walk along the boardwalk to Garrucha with its big harbour. A nature reserve runs down through the village to the beach and finishes just behind the beach in a lake edged with reeds. Good for families to feed the ducks and great to watch the sunset! The club itself is beautifully kept and walking towards the beach or bars through the maze-like grounds was sheer bliss, taking in all the fountains, flowers and plantings. There is a second lovely pool on the site with a snack bar and the club's Dali Restaurant was extremely good value for money and has entertainment on some nights; our only disappointment with that being that it was all aircon indoors, when the evenings outside were so lovely and we would rather have been outside. It is a long way from Murcia airport (1.5 hours on the new toll road or 3.5 hours on the old road!) so we hired a car and if you do, and fancy a trip out, we would highly recommend amazing Cartagena and the Mar Menor (and maybe La Manga for the strip or golf) - not to be missed although all back near the airport! Of course there is always Almeria and the Tabernas Desert to visit nearer to hand and the village where the people live in caves. Vera town was definitely fun on the Saturday market and we found a really good, cheap local cafe and joined the locals - the Van Gough. North of Vera the coastline is not so scenic, as this is where they used to mine for silver and it's hard to tell the hills from spoil heaps, although there are lots of derelict bridges, chimneys and buildings which add interest and the rock shines bright in the sun. To the south, although we didn't have time to go there too, there is a large country park area towards Almeria which was apparently also worth a visit for the scenery. Whatever you do, enjoy the sunshine! |
