The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight is a perfect place for relaxing in an 'old world' atmosphere, but with sporting and music festivals that are bang up to date! It has been known as the garden Isle for many years, mainly because of its mild climate and long growing season.
There are a wealth of attractions to suit visitors of all ages including;
Queen Victoria's home at Osborne, Blackgang Chine, Dinosaur Museum, Brading Roman Villa, Steam Railway, Cricket Academy, Botanical Gardens, and many more... (http://www.islandbreaks.co.uk/)
The Ventnor / St Lawrence, Ventnor area
The town of Ventnor has been popular with visitors since Victorian times. Built on a sloping site overlooking the sea the whole town faces south over the channel.
There are good restaurants and bars overlooking the beach. The local fishing boats bring their catch in each morning and sell from the Ventnor Fisheries shop, fresh crab and lobster are always a favourite.
St Lawrence is outside the town along the coast towards St Catherine's lighthouse on the southernmost tip of the Island. ( http://stlawrenceiow.co.uk/default.aspx )
The Island glass works are a few minutes walk from the house where you can watch beautiful handmade glass being made.
Also situated on the under-cliff are the Botanical Gardens and the local cricket ground which houses the Cricket Academy where professional coaching is available to children by prior arrangement. (http://www.iow-cricketacademy.co.uk/index.html)
The coastal path which circumnavigates the Island passes through the village giving access to a network of footpaths which are more than 500miles in length. ( http://www.iowramblers.com/)

Thimble House far exceeded our expectations. It was spotlessly clean and came supplied with everything you needed to enjoy your stay. The owners provided a very generous welcome pack of groceries. There were clear instructions as to how to operate the heating, hot water, showers etc. The owners rang us on two occasions to check that everything was satisfactory and that we were having a good time, which we were. I can thoroughly recommend this property. Response: We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay so much. Thank you for taking the time to write such an enthusiastic review. We look forward to welcoming you back to Thimble House at some time in the future. |

Firstly, the service. The owner was fantastically responsive to all our questions however small and the information pack provided was comprehensive. The personal touch made us feel at ease throughout the booking process and when we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at the thoughtfulness of our host. The welcome pack included a variety of items which was enough to provide us all with the essentials (bread, eggs, cheese, wine !) to tide us over. There is a post office locally with a few essential items and there a few small shops a short drive away. I'd recommend getting your supermarket of choice to deliver when you arrive, as it saved us a lot of hassle and was well worth our while sorting out in advance. The house itself is situated in a very picturesque area, effectively under a cliff overlooking the sea from the garden and balconies. Ideal for sitting in the garden on a sunny day, into the evenings with the wood burning stove keeping us all warm (as my travelling companions will attest, I became quite attached to this). We were a party of two families, each with two adults and two kids (ranging four months to seven years). The house was big enough that we could have our own space if required, although we were blessed with good weather so tended to dine and socialise Al fresco. If you have kids, Blackgang Chine is a short drive along the coast. A tip worth noting is to go towards to beginning of your stay, as you are able to go as many times as you like within a seven day period . As it's just up the road it is worth going early to get on all of the rides before it gets too busy. We come from quite a rural area ourselves, so are used to seeing a lot of wildlife. One thing that I've never seen run across the garden though, is a badger. We only saw 'Boris' run across a couple of times, but he was definitely a talking point ! If you have toddlers, just be aware that there are steps down into the property, as well as steps down to the garden so they'd need to be supervised, although our four, six and seven year olds were absolutely fine. We would happily return to the property and as a group would heartily recommend it. Response: Thank you for all your tips for future guests as well as your kind comments about the property. When guests enjoy their holiday as much as you seem to have done it makes it all worthwhile. I think the badger has acquired several different names this season! |
