Cottage | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 7
OPEN ALL YEAR Smugglers is a pretty & cosy early victorian Cottage in the centre of Ventnor, sleeping 7 people comfortably, plus a cot if required. There is a large double bedroom with a single room attached & a double room with a twin room attached. Both doubles have king sized pocket sprung beds. There is a shower room, and a family bathroom fitted with a toilet, basin & bath with shower attachment. Downstairs there is a comfortable living room with a wood burning stove, leading to the dining room & newly fitted kitchen. The courtyard garden has seating & a barbecue area as well as a quirky outside toilet! At the side of the cottage is a useful covered passageway that lends itself perfectly to storage of pushchairs, bicycles, wellington boots, kayaks & surfboards. The double doors open onto the road for easy loading & unloading. There is no parking at the property, however there are two car parks and free roadside parking which is less than 5 minutes walk away. Buses run every half hour through the day from a bus stop moments from the cottage (Boots in the High Street) and hourly through the night.
We regret that, due to the steepness of Tulse Hill & the roads around Ventnor, the property is not suitable for the infirm.
Smugglers is in the centre of the lovely seaside town of Ventnor. Moments from the high street, it is a short walk to Ventnor's restaurants, pubs & coffee shops, as well as the beach. The pretty villages of Bonchurch, Niton & Shanklin are also close by. Ventnor golf course is less than 1.5 miles away, with the most stunning views across glorious countryside to the sea. Only a short drive away is Queen Victoria's beloved home Osborne House, the historic Carisbrooke Castle, Yarmouth Castle as well as family attractions like Blackgang Chine & Sandown Zoo. The wilder beaches to the west offer diving, paragliding, surfing & kayaking. For walkers, there are over 500 miles of very well signposted footpaths on the Island, more per square mile than any other English county! It is not far to The Needles & Alum Bay, Tennyson Down, Newtown Nature Reserve & much more. Yarmouth & Cowes are no more than 30 minutes by car, for those who love their sailing.

We were a group of 7 friends, three couples and a single and rented the cottage for an extended weekend (three nights); The owners Sally and Matt gave us a warm welcome, gave us the key and introduces us to the cottage and all its facilities (which are many); they are really amiable and helpful.
The cottage has a very friendly touch, we all felt at home very soon after arriving. There was a nice welcome package and two bottles of sparkling wine in the fridge. I even got a birthday card for my 40th birthday, which was the reason for our stay. The kitchen is completely new and contains everything you need, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and through the window you look into the lovely garden, which is very green and cozy. There are also chairs provided so you can sit in the garden if you want.
The living room provides enough space for seven people and the wood burning stove was a real nice addition, but if you don't want to use it you don't have to, the central heating is working fine. The bedrooms are on the first floor, we slept really well, and also on the first floor you find a bathroom with a toilet and bath tub and another bathroom with a shower. One toilet for seven people may sound problematic, but it wasn't really a problem for us.
Wifi is provided and worked very well throughout the cottage.
The little walk up the hill from the high street and bus station to the cottage is quite steep, but very short, it's only a couple of steps, and the street is very quiet. The location is quite good because all the restaurants, cafes and also the beach (less than 5 minutes walk) are very near.
We did some nice walks on the coastal path to the Botanic Garden (which is fantastic) and to Bonchurch, the landscape is unbelievably beautiful, the beaches look very promising (as it was winter we were not using them extensively). The weather was very friendly, sunny and mild.
Ventnor is a really nice place, small but not too small, it has enough infrastructure (bus station, restaurants, cafes on the beach) and all the people we met very very friendly and helpful.
Hope to come back some day!
Gosh - thank you! It is our great pleasure to know that you love our cottage and Ventnor as much as we do. We hope to see you again soon!

"Lovely cottage, very well situated in a quiet road."
We enjoyed a wonderful week, in october at Smugglers cottage. We have had a very well welcome. Sally and Matt give us food at the arrival (milk, eggs, butter, bread, coffee, tea and wine).
The cottage was very well equipped for all my needs. WIFI is also provided, TV, DVD.
Beds are very comfortable and large.
There is a lot of restaurant near the cottage. The co-op is at the bottom of the road.
All is perfect.

"A lovely place"
Spacious, clean and simply lovely. I have no issues with saying you'd have a wonderful time at this house.
It may not be for everyone so as long as you understand a few things you'll be very happy:
- It's on a very steep hill
- Your car is parked on-street a few minutes away
- Two bedrooms link off other rooms
From the friendly initial contact to the welcome basket when you arrive the owners have a brilliant place and service.

"Lovely cottage, fantastic service."
Matt and Sally met us at the cottage with an amazing welcome. The bedrooms are large and comfortable. The cottage overall very well equipped. Generous welcome basket including all the essentials plus a bottle of fizz. Nothing was too much trouble fir the Clarkes. Matt even got his brother to call me to sort out an IT problem I was having! Town is very short walk down very steep hill - not for those with health problems! Overall a very comfortable, enjoyable stay.

"A beautiful,charming home from home ."
A lovely cottage in a good location for all that Ventnor has to offer . The cottage itself is homely , well decorated and beautifully furnished . As a person who loves cooking the kitchen was very well equipped for all my needs , and a dishwasher and washing machine as well . A beautiful cottage garden complete with BBQ which was perfect as we were lucky enough to have wall to wall sunshine .

"Perfect location, lovely cottage with everything you need, very spacious and warm."
We had a wonderful week in the February half term with our four children, there was plenty of things to do, Ventnor is a beautiful town and has a fantastic beach even in the winter.
The cottage was excellent very well equipped even a high chair for our youngest so all we had to pack was clothes.
The wood burner was a great bonus it was lovely to be cosy in the evenings.
It was brilliant to have hot water all the time especially with a big family.
We really enjoyed our holiday and are looking forward to staying again soon.

"A lovely, relaxing place to stay in a charming seaside town"
We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Smugglers Cottage. Sleepy little Ventnor is our favourite place to stay on the island. The cottage provided a lovely, snug, home from home. The place has just been renovated and is spotless throughout, with a really nice sheltered cottage garden, where we took in the early October sunshine. Sally and Matt made us so welcome and we were really impressed by the generosity of the arrival food items that went way beyond 'staples' - milk, bread, coffee, tea, eggs, butter, even wine. So much more than we have ever had in a holiday let before. There's a lovely wood burner for a log fire and a host of TV, DVD, posh stereo-type stuff to keep us amused. Beds very comfortable and, although a cottage by name, the side rooms on each bedroom made it the perfect place to give a family, or bigger group, some space. It is conveniently located on a very quiet hill near the centre of Ventnor. Free parking is a 3 minute walk away up the hill and around the corner, on a quiet residential street. The well-stocked local Co-op is a very short hop, the seafront is less than 5 minutes away and the enchanting hamlet of Bonchurch is a refreshing 20 minutes away along the coastal walk. For food, we'd recommened Phileas Fogg (30 seconds away) for dinner, or the wonderful newly-landed fish, fried fresh in front of you, from the little fishing pier takeaway on the seafront, which is fantastic. The Spyglass Inn on the seafront is also great for really good pub grub. All in all, enthusiastically recommended.

"WHAT A GREAT HOLIDAY"
When we arrived Matt and Sally were there to greet us, they are a lovely couple who went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed (including eggs, bread, butter, tea, coffee & wine..). The cottage is beautiful: it has been renovated to a very high standard whilst maintaining its charm. The facilities are excellent both inside and out, we were lucky enough to have good weather and enjoyed cooking outside on the BBQ provided. There was ample space for us all, plus friends who visited us, who live on the Island. I will be recommending the cottage to all my friends and family.
We visited Blackgang Chine, Robin Hill, The Model Village at Godshill, Sandown Zoo and Beach. The Donkey Sanctuary at Wroxall, the Maze, The Spy Glass, Met Bar and Ale and Oyster in Ventnor, Boniface Downs, plus the lovely beaches at Ventnor & Bonchurch, not fogetting a great golf course for hubby, all of which I would recommend. We also went fishing on a boat trip from Ventnor which was great fun.
We took our children aged 15, 18 & 23 our grandaughter aged 3, Mum aged 77 & our 2 terriers, the whole family had a great time and loved the cottage and attractions, we found something for everyone and will most definately be back. WE can't wait to stay at Smugglers Cottage in the winter with the log fire roaring...
