The North West Italy region
The Village of Airole
This stunningly beautiful ancient village is, in many places, hewn out of the rock upon which it is perched, high above the River Roja Valley. It is impossible to describe the fascinating labyrinth of passageways and steps which link level to level. Below are some general views which will give you an idea of its natural beauty.
Monaco/Monte Carlo lies just about 20 miles west of Ventimiglia. Here a totally different kind of shopping and cultural experience can be had! For many years, Monaco and particularly Monte Carlo, have become synonymous with wealth and fame! Visit the world-renowned Casino if you dare, stroll the many interesting streets packed with extremely up-market boutiques specialising in designer-brand merchandise, visit the marina and take in the spectacular views, or simply sample the history and culture of the old town of Monaco itself, perched atop a rocky cliff. For further details: www.monte-carlo.mc
A further 15 miles west of Monaco lies Nice on the French Riviera or Cote d’Azur. This ever-popular, chic, elegant resort boasts much charm and cultural history. Close by are Cannes, again full of history and charm, and St. Tropez, home to many of the world’s rich and famous! Highly cosmopolitan, this area not only has wonderful beaches and scenery, but excellent shopping. Nice Cote d’Azur International Airport is also situated here. Further information can be found at: www.nice-cotedazur.org and www.niceaeroport.fr
Travelling east from Ventimiglia, your route takes you through some of the prettiest scenery imaginable via Bordighera where there is an English library and club, San Remo; which also has an English club, Imperia, Diano Marina, Alassio, and Savona to Genoa. It is worth taking time out to visit the fairytale village of Portofino whilst in the area, or stop off at the popular resorts of Alassio and Diano Marina—favoured by British visitors for many decades on the way. Eventually you reach the historic old city of Genoa, and Genoa International Airport. More details at: www.airport.genova.it and www.doit/tourism/genova/genoa/html
What is There To Do?
It is hard to imagine an area richer in its diversity of scenery, culture and activities. With the coast just 8 miles to the south, visitors can sample the extraordinarily beautiful rocky coastline and sandy beaches of the Italian Riviera (known as Riviera dei Fiori—or Coast of Flowers), and the equally beautiful, but more cosmopolitan French Cote d’Azur (blue coast) with its famous resorts. All manner of water-sports and other marine activities are offered. The sea fishing here is particularly good; mainly for tuna, with numerous companies offering boat trips. The area from Nice to Genoa is designated as a National Marine Park, with trips to see whales, dolphins and porpoises available. At Genoa there is one of the largest marine aquariums in Europe. Or just sightsee by helicopter from Monte-Carlo.
Moving inland from the coast, the area surrounding Airole is just a small part of the Parco Nazionale del Mercantour (National Park) - designated an area of outstanding natural beauty stretching from Nice to Ventimiglia in the south, to Tende in the north, straddling the French/Italian border. Within this natural woodland, rivers, ravines, valleys and lakes and mountains are preserved, but offer the visitor ample opportunity for walking, fishing, rock-climbing and more.
About 40 miles inland from Airole is the internationally renowned skiing resort of Limone Piemonte. This pretty town is the main resort in the south-west Italian Alps, and offers downhill and cross-country skiing as well as snow boarding, ice-skating and paragliding. Here, visitors can also enjoy rock-climbing, rafting, canoeing, bicycle rides, horse riding, and golf to mention but a few.
If golf is your passion, you will be spoilt for choice. There are 25 golf clubs on the Cote d’Azur, and many more along the Italian Riviera, most notably at San Remo. More can be found inland as far as Limone Piemonte.
The entire area is rich in natural features with caverns at Borghetto, Balzi Rossi, and Monaco. The climate is so temperate, that botanically, the area is the most lush in all Europe. Botanical Gardens are situated at Monaco and Villa Hanbury.
Rich too in local products, the visitor will find olives, olive oil, truffles, wild mushrooms, cheeses and a wealth of fruit and vegetables at the many street markets. Wine production is an important local industry - most notably at Dolceacqua where DOC Rocese di Dolceacqua is produced. The world-renowned Barolo district is about 90 minutes away. The entire area is well-served with restaurants and bars specialising in typical, local dishes using only fresh, locally grown produce, meat and fish.
Local events are numerous—carnivals, flower, food and wine festivals, Vespa scooter festival, Monte-Carlo Rally, Milan-San Remo Bicycle Race, etc. We can give you more details!
In short—a wonderful, warm climate year-round, breathtaking scenery, museums, historic buildings, fantastic food and wine coupled with a vast diversity of things to do make this area idyllic—paradise!

"A haven in Liguria"
My husband and I stayed here in Airole during Easter 2012 and we were pleasantly surprised and delighted by the facilities of apartment, the tranquility, the ease of access to Monte Carlo (less than 40km), NIie and Menton etc. and it was a wonderful and unforgettable five days. Steve, the caretaker, was wonderfully helpful, punctual, knowledgable and always available for any questions we had during our stay. The view we had from the apartment was stunning and there was a lovely river running the lower grounds of the property. The children were always safe and they loved it. The apartment was stylishly but practically furnished and spotlessly clean with every kitchen utensil you could possibly need. I can't praise the caretaker, the property or the area highly enough. It was fantastic value for money given the location and we would absolutely recommend it to our friends and family.

"Perfect, Exactly what we were looking for."
Apartment clean and exactly as described. Suited our needs perfectly and an ideal location for sightseeing, daytrips or just lounging by the pool. We had 10 days here but could easily have stayed longer. Thank you Steve for always being on hand for local knowledge and information! Hope to return sometime.
