The North East Italy / Veneto region
Other towns to visit in the region: Treviso (30 Km), Padova (40 Km) Vicenza & Verona (more than 50 Km).
Venice has been able to preserve its traditional life; its memories, habits and customs of its past, many of its old festivals do indeed still survive...
CARNIVAL Twelve days leading up to shrove Tuesday. It is the Carnival that epitomises city, with its spirit of transgression, its sense of fun and endless partying. Masked revellers flock the streets, theatres arrange special programmes and masquerades are held in the squares. The authentic Venetian mask is a simple black cape that goes right down to your feet, the "Bauta", and also very famous is the - "Plague Doctor" - based on the medieval doctor's beaked face protector and black gown, worn as precaution against plague. Transgression means also giving ourselves the pleasures of the table: the "fritola" and the thin and golden "galano" are typical specialities, a must during Carnival.
FILM FESTIVAL From late August to early September.Venice International film festival is second only in importance to the Cannes festival. All movies are shown in the original language.
REDENTORE Between the Saturday and the third Sunday of July. The most well-known is the traditional night festival that takes place in the Giudecca Canal on the eve of the Festa del Redentore to commemorate the end of the plague of 1577. On this occasion a pontoon bridges unites the Giudecca island to the island in front across the great canal. All Venice comes out on holiday: boats of every kind covered with lanterns, on which merry parties pass the whole night consuming huge suppers, and those who cannot go out in a boat, crowd the Zattere overlooking it and watching the firework display with which this wonderful festival culminates. On the Sunday a regatta is held in the Giudecca Canal.
Venice / Central Venice area
First-time visitors may be surprised that from Piazzale Roma onwards, all journeys are either on foot or by water vehicles: no cars, nor cross-roads or traffic lights!
Venice is a labyrinth of foundations, narrow streets, squares, paved roads, channels, bridges and old channels that are now streets; it is not a large city, and it is quite possible to walk from one end to the other in an hour.
In fact, one of the many joys of visiting Venice is simply walking through its alleyways. Waterways are as important in its life as the network of its streets: the canals filled with shallow water about 2- 4 meters deep, used by water buses, water taxis, gondolas and traghetti (gondolas with 2 oars used to cross the river), are spanned by bridges that connects both banks, often flanked by long narrow streets- the fondamenta- that run close to the foundation of the houses.
Observing a map of Venice, you can easily notice that its shape is a fish crossed by the Grand Canal which divides the city in two parts connected by 3 main Bridges: the Rialto bridge made of stone, the Accademia bridge in wood, and the Railway bridge in stone.
For now just wander through the site and dream about actually being in Venice...
The luxuriant Venice, in days of silk and spices trade with Byzantium, is proudly portrayed by Vittore Carpaccio's paintings, which refined views of the city show the splendour of its architecture and life in the lagoon depicted as if all the tones of the spices (from ginger to cinnamon) coloured the lively alleys intoxicated by the bustle of foreign merchants, the swaying gondolas in the Saint Mark's pool, the myriad of bridges spanned at random between countless islands and even the centre of Venetian trades - Rialto Market. The power of Venice was not exclusively based on Murano's polychrome blown glasses, on or precious silks, however was based on an innate ability to buy and transport refined goods from far and exotic countryside; also its might of the arms was relevant. European economy was so dependent on Venice's Market that it became into the habit of circulating small coupons with average prices of the spices sold at Venice Rialto Market... Venice enjoyed a uniquely ordered administration headed by the doge, an elected leader whose powers were minutely defined by the Venetians constitution.
The Grand Canal snakes through the city creating 6 districts (San Marco, S. Polo, Castello, S. Croce, Dorsoduro and Cannaregio), and the splendid facades of the palaces that crown its banks testify to the city's history of immense wealth. Although their external decorations vary, the palaces share the same basic structure: the most decorated floors, the grand floor, housed luxurious salons used to entertain visitors; on the ground floor were stored the goods of the rich merchant families, and the upper floor housed the family during the winter. They were built with impermeable stone supported by timber pile that do not rot in the water lagged subsoil because there is no free oxygen that causes decay.
Covering the Grand Canal by boat you can re-lived the enchanting of the old Lady, observing the lavish façades and their different styles. The influence of the Byzantine world is identifiable by their ground-floor arcades and horseshoe-shaped arched open galleries of the first floor and by their roundels with leaves or palm trees motifs. Gothic palaces are numerous in Venice: this style was characterized by the use of pointed ogee arches and carved window heads, trefoil and quatrefoil patterns (the most famous example is the Doge's Palace). During the Renaissance houses were often built in sandstone rather than traditional brick: lavish stone carving, a rounded central arch flanked by narrower side openings and bold projecting roof cornices are a features of this age. The exuberance show the influence of Baroque style: revelling in bold ornamentation that leaves no surface un-carved, cherubs and grotesque masks animate the main façade of buildings; recessed windows and massive blocks with deep ridges give solidity to the lower walls.
MURANO Famous for its glass factories since 13th century, when Venice's artisans were forced off Venice proper because their kilns kept starting fires. Good restaurants to eat fish.
BURANO Well-known for its artistic handmade lace, in this traditional fishing village, fishermen haul in their catch every morning as their wives, black-clad, sit in the doorways of the fantastically coloured houses, creating unique knots of Venetian lace.
TORCELLO A safe haven for early fishermen fleeing barbarians on the mainland, was the most powerful island of the lagoon, before Venice usurped its inhabitants and its glory. Its cathedral contains 11th and 12th century mosaics of the last judgement and the Virgin Mary.
LIDO is the only island in the lagoon with roads and cars, linked to the mainland by ferry-boat, 9 minutes by waterbus from "Giardini": it is the setting for Thomas Mann's unforgettable Death in Venice, which gives a vivid impression of the sensuality and mystery for which Venice is famous. The Lido is now more of a summer beach town, full of beach bums.
How to get there
-The area is quite and very easy to reach, because it is a few minutes from the vaporetto stop called “Giardini-Biennale”, no bridge to cross to get to.
-Close by there is the street “Via Garibaldi” full of well-stocked shops, supermarket, bars, restaurants.
-The public water-bus stop (“Giardini”) is very important: many lines stop there (number 1-82-41-42-51-52-61-62-N night line) and assure any link in Venice and for the others islands (Murano, Burano, etc.). From Railway Station and car terminal Parking the apartment is far 20 minutes by waterbus public service lines!

Some friends wrote me...
'We have very much enjoyed our week here. The apartment is lovely and felt like our own home in Venezia. Great location too. The Giardini-Biennale vaporetto stop has to be the prettiest in town and we liked the feeling of being in a genuine neighbourhood rather than amongst all the (other!) tourists.'
