Description: Dorsoduro is one of the six districts of Venice and is located in the south of the city. It was the first area to be colonized and was named after the hard ground it is constructed on, that also includes some of the citys highest areas.
A beautiful and calm residential district, Dorsoduro also offers a number of bars and peaceful open-air terraces; located in one of the highest points in the city, they are a perfect spot from which to enjoy some of the best panoramic views over the Venice Lake.
A walk along the Grand Canal leads to the beautiful church of la Salute, one of the best expressions of Baroque Venetian architecture. It was constructed as a tribute to the Madonna for liberating the city from the devastating plague between 1630 and 1631.
The area of Dorsoduro offers a number of different art exhibitions, including La Academia, La Fundación Cini and the Peggy Guggenheim collection with works that date back to the XX century.
Another church worthy of a visit is San Niccoló dei Mendicoli, located in what was formerly the poorest part of the district giving shelter to fishermen and mariners. Not so far from the church is one of the districts most elegant palaces, the XVII Century Ca Rezzonico originally belonging to the family of the same name. A walk around the palace and its interior enables visitors to appreciate its numerous works of art, and to admire the lifestyle of the Venetian aristocrats of the era.
Zattere is located in the south of the district and is a long pier that extends out to the Island of Giudecca. The pier is named after the wooden vessels (zattere) that unloaded the wood used to build the island. It is a residential and very peaceful area with a good offer of little bars and restaurants where visitors can eat out until late.
