The Veneto region

Venice

In Short: small neighbourhood, narrow side streets, picturesque.

Highlights: San Zaccaria church, Venice Public Gardens, Garibaldi Street.

Getting around: Ferry line 1 - tourist destination along the Canal Grande, line 41 to Murano.

Why stay: authentic local atmosphere, commercial area with bars, shops and restaurants.

Description: Castello is the largest district in Venice and is located in the east of the city. It is the only neighborhood that does not overlook the Grand Canal. It is named after from the castle that was formerly located on the island of San Pietro di Castello dating back to the first part of the Middle Ages.

The San Zaccaria church, of important historical relevance, can be traced back to the IX century. A Benedictine Convent was later added to the original building, and accommodated the daughters of some of the best families in Venice. There are a multitude of stories about the particularly uncommon life led by the nuns in the convent with parties and entertainment that also attracted young masked gentlemen. The church is the burial site of many Dogi (the chief magistrate and leader of the Ancient Republic of Venice).

The city arsenal was of great strategic importance for the city: it was a great complex that housed the ship building yards. One of the most important buildings in the city is the Basilica de San Pietro e Paolo, one of Venices largest Basilicas, of Italian gothic style, that is home to various monuments and paintings well worth visiting.

A pleasant stroll around the Venice Public Gardens is also well recommended; built by Napoleon I, they offer beautiful tree-lined avenues and various XIX rococo statues, as well as a play area including swings and slides. Every other year the parks host a large, impressive modern art festival the Biennale that is held during the summer months.
