Description: The Lido de Venecia is the peaceful green island that stretches out between the sea and the lagoon and is just a ten minute ferry ride from the San Marco square. This island is less populated and therefore less chaotic, and a famous spa location in the Adriatic largely due to its 12 kilometre stretch of beautiful beaches.
A stay on the Lido offers visitors the chance to experience a completely unique atmosphere; a fusion of cultural tourism and beach holiday. The island has always fascinated poets and writers and many came to spend time either as residents or holiday-makers including both Lord Byron and Thomas Mann.
A long walk along the “Murazzi” is a beautiful way to visit the impressive dam that was built in the XVIII century to protect the city from its tides. A further stroll should lead to the Casino, the oldest games house in the world that has been officially operating since 1638.
Not far from the Casino is the “Palazzo del Cinema” which every year hosts various events including the famous film festival , the “Mostra del Cinema di Venezia”.
The island's architecture is a complete mixture of styles; heading into the centre there are many Liberty style buildings and green areas where as the ancient Santa Maria Elisabetta, overlooking the lagoon is home to a number of buildings that date back to the 1800s.
The beaches of the Lido are very beautiful with fine sand and natural dunes, the water is clean and peaceful, located behind the dams that protect them from the tide.
Visitors can choose between the public beaches or the more elegant and carefully prepared private beaches in the central areas of Lido. The first private beach was officially opened in 1857 and marked the beginning of the tourist movement that has had the Lido de Venecia as a focal point ever since.
The Lido de Venecia is without a doubt one of the most recommended locations for a really all-round holiday.
