Description: Mestre is a coastal city located across the lagoon from Venice. Its geographical situation has meant it has always been subject to the numerous different invasions of Venice until it was actually conquered by Venice and offered its additional defense.
In the second post-war era the general awakening of the Italian economy caused for its sudden development. The area grew to the size it maintains today; with a significant location as the main port of access into Venice (the location of the nearest airport for example) and over the famous Liberty bridge, the Ponte della Liberta.
In the last decade the city profile underwent a progressive change with the reorganization of its different central districts and the construction of new green and shopping areas.
The main city square Erminio Ferretto was developed in the Middle Ages as the city market square, whilst nowadays t is the final stop for many trams and home to the central offices for many shops.
Alongside the square is the the Teatro Toniolo, and in the vicinity it is also possible to visit the Duomo di San Lorenzo, the Palazzo da Re and the unique Clock tower, the Torre dell ´Orologio that was originally created as a residential building and was later incorporated within Mestres second castle. It is currently the only remaining tower of the fifteen that made up the original fortress.
The majority of churches in Mestre are very modern but there are several particularly different examples such as the church of San Girolamo (1261) the oldest religious building in the city or San Rocco.
Every year the city centre organizes the Mestre Più an event that includes street markets and entertainment. The event lasts a whole month and is organized twice a year; the first before Christmas and the second between the months of May and June. On the first Saturday of each month for the Corso del Popolo visitors can find an antiques market, where as on 29th September the streets of the city centre come to life with gastronomy markets and local products to celebrate the festivals for the citys patron saint.
