Venice, Veneto

In Short: craft workshops, glass making, small narrow streets, picturesque.

Highlights: glass museum, Palace Del Mula, Santa Maria and Donato Church.

Getting around: ferry LN to Burano, ferry line 41-42 every 20 minutes to Dorsoduro and St Mark's Square.

Why stay: popular with tourists, direct contact with one of the oldest and most original arts in Italy: glass blowing.

Description: Murano is an independent city that is located approximately one kilometer from Venice. The location is famous for its glass works of art, particularly its lamps, glasses, cups and decoration. The city was originally part of Venice, gaining autonomy in 1275 with the election of its independent organizations, laws and its own currency.

The citys fame spread quickly throughout Europe with its unique glass work. The ovens that were previously located in Venice were transported to Murano because of the risk of fire (at this time Venice was entirely wood constructions).

The glasswork art was at those times maintained a complete secret of the profession and the maestri were forced to live on the island, and only allowed to leave with special permission. There was an important crisis in the glass industry in the XV century with the beginning of the manufacture of Bohemian crystal. The island could only maintain growth with its elaborate production of the most popular chandeliers. However it was a real privilege to be a master glass worker, they were the only craftsmen permitted to marry the daughters of Patrician families without any title of nobility.

A walk through the city and its narrow streets offers visitors the chance to share in the history of the profession with numerous handicrafts shops displaying elegant glass objects, or to explore the Glass Museum that is situated in the gothic style Palazzo Giustiniani.

Another worthwhile visit is to the Palazzo de Mula with its XII century Venetian-Byzantine façade.
