The North East Italy region

Veneto area is one of the 20 regions of Italy. Having been for a long period in history a land of mass-emigration, the region is today one of the greatest immigrant-receiving regions in the country.

The Region had been for centuries an independent state, known as the Venetian Republic, and the region was annexed to Italy in 1866 after brief Austrian and French rule.

Its capital was, and still is Venice, which for a period ran one of the vastest and richest maritime republics and trade empires in the world. Due to this recent annexation to the rest of Italy, most Venetians still have a unique identity, and the Veneto is one of the two Italian regions (along with Sardinia) in which its inhabitants are officially recognized as being "a population". Once the heartland of the Venetian Republic, Veneto is today among the wealthiest, most developed and industrialised regions of Italy.

Having one of the country's richest historical, natural, artistic, cultural, musical and culinary heritages, it is also the most visited region of Italy, with about 60 million tourists every year. Besides Italian, many inhabitants also speak Venetian.

In 10 minutes on foot you can reach St. Marc Square and Rialto Bridge. With the water-bus (the stop is in front of the apartment), you can get to the principal islands af the Lagoon:

- Murano is famous for its Glass Factory;

- Burano is characteristic for its colourated house and it is famous for its laces;

- in Torcello you can see the Devil Bridge, the Attila's Throne and the ancient Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral;

- in St. Michele there is the historical cemetery;

- in Lido there is the beach and on september, you can see the Internataional Show of Cinema of Venice.

From the 'Giardini' water-bus stop you can reach the Biennial Exhibition of Moder Art.

The 18th century, was a golden period for Venice and its Lagoon and if you want to live it through again you can walk around the town following any itinerary: museum, palaces, churches, monuments….

any important people have come to Venice:

the great poet Dante who arrived in Venice as ambassador visited the Arsenal and he described it in Canto XXI of Inferno.

Leonardo Da Vinci who praised of the Arsenalotti (the workers of the Arsenal) for the building of gallery (the Venetian Ships) like the Bucintoro which was built for the Doge.

Near our apartment you can still see the Arch that belonged to walls of the Ca Sagredo which was destroyed by the fire of the Arsenale in 1569.
