The North East Italy / Veneto region
Think of a rich paradise, holding the natural beauty of Dolomites, Lake Garda (the largest lake in Italy) and Euganean Hill, along with the architectural marvels of ancient cities like Verona, Vicenza and Padua and.... welcome to Veneto!
In terms of landscapes, Veneto might be reasonably considered one of the most various and "complete" Italian areas: the large level expanses counterpoint the rocky Dolomites spurs, marking the the north-western border of the region; the Adriatic sea, with marvellous beaches and ports, to against the large romantic stretch of Lake Garda; from the fascinating small countryside towns to the marvellous big 'tourist cities'. Veneto responds every tourist needs, no matter whether you like skiing, rather than surfing or a cultural vacation, among beautiful churches, villas and historical buildings... even the cuisine is superb!
Where now lie cities like Vicenza, Padua, Verona and Treviso, onto fertile soils, rich in silt sediments, the Romans built their frontier stations. The cities had a long time of prosperity as strategically positioned at the centre of the Empire road network, even undergoing several German invasions during the V century AC. The situation improved under the Venetian domination: the medieval towns in Veneto were built along important commercial routes like la Serenissima (that links the seaports of Venice and Genoa) and the Brenner pass, which was crossed by Northern European traders coming to Italy across the Alps. The agricultural, commercial and booty riches, as well as the construction of Renaissance and public buildings, most of them designed by Andrea Palladio, contributed to make this region so incredibly beautiful. Nowadays, after decades of crisis, the region of Veneto, also thanks to the small and medium industries, has become one of the richest regions in Europe.
The Venice, Veneto area
Rising as if by magic from the waters, city of dreams, bright and splendid: that is Venice. It reveals different and particular languages in every season, highlighting its innumerable qualities in which historic memories, natural and artistic beauties, traditional courtesy and hospitality concur to make it so unique.
World Heritage Site, as acknowledged by Unesco, Venice shows a complex urban formation whose primitive nucleus was the area of Rialto. A land use plan set the rules to excavate a canal network, whose ground was used to erect and strengthen the insular plan. This is how came up Canal Grande and the numerous "rii" of the city, that nowadays link with other four-hundred bridges and as many as 118 small islands. The connections were fortified by a dense pilework of huge trees' trunks on which rest the foundations of every single house or building.
Unique gateway towards the East for a very long time, Venice overworked this strategic position in order to achieve a huge power and richness in terms of commerce and culture. The amazing treasures preserved in Piazza St Marco are sufficient to witness the high influence of Venice as worldwide power from the XII to the XIV century.
Its ancient buildings now are museums, shops, hotels and apartments, and the old convents used as works of art's restoration centres. Nonetheless the unequalled conformation has allowed Venice to not change too much: certain areas have just remained immaculate, silent and you can only hear the water lapping along with the romantic Gondole and some steamboats.
Over 12 millions visitors every year give in to the charm of this enchanted place, where the streets are full of water and everything remembers of the ancient splendour and lavishness.
