Venice, Veneto

Founded by the Venetians in 500 to escape the barbaric invasions , around the year 1000 had already become one of the most powerful cities in Europe. From the primitive settlements of Torcello , Jesolo and Malamocco , the city was subsequently built on 118 islands in the lagoon , to become an important center of political, commercial and cultural . A testament to the power of Repubbica marinara Venice is still possible to admire the beautiful squares , bridges and buildings in which are kept timeless works of Giorgione , Titian , Tintoretto, Veronese and many others.

The most famous of Venice is without doubt St. Mark's Square , the center of which stands the Basilica of San Marco with its five domes. The bronze horses that dominate the main door were transported to Venice from Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade (1204) . The interior is covered with gold mosaics depicting passages from the Bible. It was the chapel of the Doges of the Republic of Venice.

Next to the Basilica is the Palazzo Ducale. The two buildings are joined by the Porta della Carta . The Ducal Palace was the seat for many centuries the most important government in Europe, which was administered in the beautiful Hall of the Great Council. The Campanile of San Marco , built in 1173, was rebuilt in front of the Ducal Palace after the collapse of 1902. On the loggia of the bell tower in Verona red marble is possible to admire the bas-reliefs representing the companies of the Republic of Leo.

High impact are the bridges of the " Serenissima" , in particular the Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, while among the places and churches to visit you report the Arsenal of the twelfth century (the largest in the world) , the basilica Santa Maria della Salute , the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari , the synagogues of the Ghetto. District - museum Canareggio and the Giudecca , currently under development with the establishment of many artistic initiatives .

Venice is famous for its historic cafés , such as Florian , for exhibitions and museums, including the Ca ' Rezzonico , the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and also for being the home of major festivals , such as the Cinema , and the Biennials of architecture, art , music, dance. At the opera is consecrated one of his most famous monuments : the Teatro La Fenice , which hosts the International Festival of Contemporary Music .
