The North East Italy / Veneto region

Veneto is the region that has traditionally, and almost for 1000 years, been the dominion of the "Serenissima Republica di Venezia". This means that the coasts were the ports and the hinterland the source and the first miles of travel for all the goods that Venice traded with the East and far East regions.

Veneto now is famous for its food industry, manufacturing of fashion items and clothes and for being the home of Prosecco. In Veneto, in fact the there are the headquarters of Diadora trainers, Dolomite, Tecnica and Rollerblades, Benetton, Diesel and Marzotto to mention few of the most famous brands.

In Veneto you can ski in Cadore (Cortina d'Ampezzo), there are some of the most prestigious Golf Clubs, such as Lido di Venezia and it is the easy gateway to reach the former Yugoslavian regions through ferries and speed liners that leave Venice tourist port every day.

Venice, Veneto / San Marco area

Venice is full of history and has been founded by the refugees of the mainland after the Barbarian invasions in the 6th to 7th century AC.

The most antique areas of the Lagoon are: Torcello, San Marco, San Pietro di Castello and Rialto. The other "islands" were populated and connected in the period after the 10th century. In fact, in the Red House, appear, at 1.3mt below water level and 2.35 of current pavement, one of the oldest walls made of sesquipedales, the antique large Roman bricks dated 10th Century.

The Red House was built by the Guilt of German Bakers in the 12th century and then further restored up to the pre-napoleonic period with the same look and orientation. It has been fully restored for the first time, after at least 300 years, in 2008/09. The area was populated very early in the town history due to the fact that it is equally distant from Rialto and San Marco, the business and religious/political centres of the town.

All major Families in the 12th till the 14th century have established there their main HQ that were: house, warehouse and trade-centres. Some families had ownerships, control or strong interest in the Holy Land, Cyprus, Crete, Cyclades, Croatian coast, Spain, Sardinia, Sicily and from these palaces they were receiving goods, Ambassadors, and orchestrating military actions against the enemy, the Turks. In some cases even against the business competitors such as Genoa, Amalfi, Pisa or another Venetian family.

How to get there

AboutMyPlace

View Interactive Map

There are many ways to get to central Venice from the Airport: Alilaguna boat (fast and direct), water taxi (faster but expensive), Bus+Vaporetto (slow and complicated). The time you need to allow to get to our house is from 1 to 2 hours depends which transportation method you will decide to use.
If you arrive by car or train, then the Vaporettos are the best way to reach The Red House. Line 2 and 1 will bring you just 3/5m miuntes from the house door. The Red House is located between the “Vaporetto” stops of S. Samuele (Line 2) and S. Angelo (line 1) in the most prestigious and central part of Venice.

The area, known for the antique shops and art galleries, is located 2 minutes away from Palazzo Grassi, the well known private collection museum of Francois Pinault (www.palazzograssi.it).

The Alilaguna service stops at Sant.Angelo and the water taxi can bring you to San Samuele square that is 3 minutes away from our house.

Further details indoors:
We have thought of The Red House as a different approach to Venice. We have decided to leave the baroc and gothic to be seen and lived outside and instead, we have furnished our house with modern design interiors.

The Full HD screens, the black large sofa with a comfortable relaxing island and the natural rover parquet meet the classic master bedroom and the family sailors roots in the twin bedroom.

Further details outdoors:
Outside the The Red house there is a quick access to some of the most prestigious museums and art galleries. In fact within 20 minutes walk ,and starting with Palazzo Grassi, there are all Venetian museums such as: Museo Correr, The Duke Palace, San Marco's Cathedral, The Prisons, Punta Della Dogana, Magazzini del Sale, Cà Rezzonico, Cà Pesaro and many more.

Despite been so central The Red House is very close to relaxing campiellos and narrow streets that host some of the nicest Bacaros (typical Venetian tapas bar) and Trattorie. Within 10 minutes walk you can choose amongst 20 different pizzas, typical Venetian and classic Italian restaurants.
