From the yurt you have a beautiful view on the sea, the mountains and on Algarrobo Costa. It is about a half hour's drive to Malaga airport, a 15-minute walk from Algarrobo Pueblo and 8 minutes by car to the sea in Algarrobo Costa. Balcón de Andaluz is centrally located for making excursions in Andalucía.

But what is a yurt ?

A yurt is a Mongolian tent traditionally used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. The structure comprises a crown or compression wheel usually steam bent, supported by roof ribs which are bent down at the end where they meet the lattice wall (again steam bent). The top of the wall is prevented from spreading by means of a tension band which opposes the force of the roof ribs. The structure is covered by layers of fabric and sheep's wool felt for isolation and weatherproofing.

Our yurt is built by Rob Matthews from Cadiar in the Alpujarras in the Sierra Nevada. The yurt has a diameter of 4.34 metres. The yurt is isolated with felt, making it relatively cool in summer while in winter the heat is retained. There is optimal ventilation: the door with a small window and a separate large window, both with mosquito screens. The so-called Crown in the roof with a mosquito screen can be opened or closed as well.

We have decorated our Yurt tastefully with a wink to the Orient. There is a brand new bed from 2.00 metres by 1.50 metres with a new very comfortable mattress. There are 2 chairs and a table and two cupboards. In summer you can use a big fan to cool down.

You can start the day on your private terrace in the bathrobe you get from us with a coffee from the NESPRESSO or a cup of tea enjoying the view and nature. In the evening you can relax or eat on your illuminated terrace.

On this terrace there is a fully equipped kitchen tent with 4 hobs on gas, a fridge, toaster and a microwave. Outside the kitchen tent there is a sink with hot and cold water. If you want, you can rent a luxury gas-BBQ.

You have a private bathroom about 5 metres from the yurt with a toilet, a shower, hair-dryer and a washbasin.

Of course you have your own private pool(open from May till October) with a diameter from about 4 square metres, with 2 sun loungers.

Balcón de Andaluz is located in Algarrobo. This is one of the many authentic Spanish white villages of La Axarquía region.

The Balcón is located very central, making it a convenient home base for many interesting day trips for instance to Nerja, Frigiliana, Comares, Alhama de Granada, the Alpujarras, the Sierra Nevada, Malaga, Granada, Gibraltar and Torcal.

You will find an info-map in your Yurt with tips for excursions etc.

In winter you can have a lot of fun to go skiing. In less than a 2 hours drive you find the large ski resort Sierra Nevada. An adult ski area with over 100 km of pistes and 30 lifts. Guaranteed snow from December to mid-April.

Other sports that you can practice are mountain biking, cycling, kite surfing and golf course on one of the many golf courses for example in Torre del Mar.

Less than 10 minutes from our Casita Balcón de Andaluz there is in Velez Malaga a big shopping mall El Ingenio. Here you will find more than 100 shops, including the large Eroski supermarket. Parking your car is very easy over there.

Algarrobo Costa has also two good supermarkets: the Lidl and the Mercadona. A visit to the weekly markets of Algarrobo, Torrox and Torre del Mar are also recommended.

Torrox and Nerja are locally known for its many bars with live-music, especially the jam sessions. Do you play an instrument and / or do you like to sing? Then it is appreciated if you play or sing some songs with the musicians. Every night is a surprise. There is often music from the 60s and 70s. However, the youngsters also brings modern music and sometimes they make real Spanish music. We're willing to give you tips when and where the jam sessions take place.

Beach lovers can indulge themselves on the sandy beaches of Algarrobo (with the blue flag of outstanding beach), Torre del Mar, Nerja, Torrox and El Morche. The beaches have good facilities and are equipped with numerous chirinquitos (cabanas) with a speciality of Espetos the Sardines on their menu. And don't miss the many restaurants. The Costa del Sol region

La Axarquía

Our Balcón de Andaluz in Algarrobo is situated in La Axarquía, the region east of Malaga. Most travel guides that cover this region, never seem to get further than a few remarks on Malaga and Nerja. And here in lies the charm of this area. No mass tourism, like the areas west of Malaga. In La Axarquía you can go in search of the authentic Spanish way of life.

La Axarquía is a mountainous area that ends at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea. A great deal of the area is taken up by the Sierra de Tejeda, mountain range and National Park with the Maroma (2065 m) as highest peak. During our search for a location close to the Spanish coast for home and for work, this area made the biggest impression on us both. The nature in the inland areas is magnificent. It is an ideally place for hiking. There are numerous authentic white villages, like the breathtaking eagles nest Comares, the lovely Cómpeta and the charming Frigiliana. Other authentic white villages include Algarrobo Pueblo, Torrox Pueblo, Canillas and Alcaucin. All have regular farmers markets where they sell local products. Occasional road delays occur as goat herder and his goats make their daily journey from fields to farm and v.v. In the spring, the landscape changes color as the almond trees and mimosa blossom.

La Axarquía and its central location offer strong benefits to culture lovers. This area has a rich history of both Venetian and Arabic influences. Malaga is a surprisingly beautiful city with many interesting sites including a compact historic center perfect for those who like to explore a city on foot. Granada with the Alhambra is a day excursion about 1, 5 hours by car from our Balcón de Andaluz. Velez Malaga is an authentic Spanish small town with many monuments. A beautiful day trip is easy made by good mountain roads to Alhama de Granada featuring many archeological ruins that stem from Moorish times. Salobreña is a Moorish city dominated by a castle. This is a must see for visitors.

An excursion to Gibraltar is recommended. Gibraltar is easy to get reach from here and makes an enjoyable day. A visit to the beautiful nature reserve Torcal with its impressive rock formations is a beautiful trip too. Don't forget the Alpurjarras.

This summary is only a selection of the things you can do in the area. Of course, we are happy to give you more information about these trips. We also have numerous other ideas for day trips or longer.

La Axarquía region has much to offer and in our view remains one of the most interesting and diverse areas of Spain and with ….. 'Le mejor clima de Europa' it offers the best climate Europe!

The area is known for its celebrations, like the “Fiësta de tres Culturas” in Frigiliana which celebrates the rich origins of the peaceful coexistence of three communities in this area: Jewish, Muslim and Christianity. This fiësta remains popular today and includes performance of traditional music and dances as well as outdoor markets offering traditional crafts and products from each culture.

A visit to Nerja is a definite must. It's a little touristy but beautiful beach location rife with little crooked lanes, charming eclectic shops and great tapas bars and restaurants. The highest point in town, Balcón de Europa, offers an amazing view of the sea. A visit to one of the Flamenco bars is highly recommended. And don't forget to visit the famous Caves (stalactite and stalagmite) of Nerja while you are there.

The weekly farmers market of Algarrobo en Torre del Mar is also worth visiting.
