Enquire nowThe Costa del Sol region
The nearest coastal resort is Torre Del Mar. This is a traditional Spanish seaside resort, recently refurbished with a lovely promenade and a large beach. There are lots of shops and some very good seafood restaurants.
If you drive east along the coast towards Nerja there are many small beaches with their own restaurants. Nerja is about a twenty minute drive along the coast and although well developed still retains some charm with its many bars and restaurants. The nearby caves, on the eastern side, are well worth a visit, boasting the largest stalactite in the world at 63m. They also contain a number of prehistoric paintings.
A drive inland will take you through a stunning and varied landscape of mountain ranges, forests and arid plains. Only a one and half hour drive away is Granada. Granada is described in the Rough Guide To Spain as "If you see only one town in Spain it should be Granada.......for here stands the Alhambra - the most exciting, sensual and romantic of all European monuments". The Alhambra stands on the hills above the town but is within reasonable walking distance of the town centre. It is a palace/fortress built by the Moors dating back 700 years and is remarkably well preserved. An absolute "must see" for anyone visiting Andalucia.
To the south of Granada stand the Sierra Nevada mountains. The mountains are snow capped for most of the year and offer excellent skiing and other winter sports. Further south from the Sierra Nevada's lie the Alpujarras, immortalised in Gerald Brennan's book "South Of Granada" or more recently by the best selling "Driving Over Lemons" by Chris Stewart. Surrounded by mountains, the deep valleys of the Alpujarras remain lush and cool throughout the summer.
The Velez Malaga / Benamargosa area
Benamargosa is surrounded by beautiful, rugged countryside. The surrounding mountains and hills are criss-crossed with ancient footpaths and irrigation channels which will take you through groves of olives, avocados, oranges and lemons. You will also see many small vineyards growing the local muscatel grape.
A few kilometres inland finds Lake Vinuela, where there is fishing and sailing. The villages around the lake - Vinuela, Alcaucin, and Periana - are also worth exploring, and there are breathtaking drives into the sierras which reach over 2000m (6000 feet).
The Arabian fortress town of Velez-Malaga, a short distance away towards the coast, is steeped in tradition and has a bustling shopping area.
A new shopping mall with hypermarket and twelve screen cinema complex is located on the edge of the town - it also has a large Spanish equivalent of Marks & Spencer.
