The Costa de la Luz / Cadiz Province region
The Costa de la Luz or " Coast of Light " is the coastal area of Andalucia which stretches from Gibraltar to Cadiz. It is nothing like its neighbour the Costa del Sol and nowhere near as busy or built up. Left unspoilt by mass tourism, there are many golden beaches stretching for miles with little or no development but all are easily accessible. They are popular with wind surfers, kitesurfers, surfers and families; indeed Tarifa is the is the kite and windsurfing capital of Europe.
The Atlantic Ocean officially begins at Tarifa and the cooler air sweeping in off the Atlantic helps reduce the temperature in summer, making the climate more enjoyable. As this is the southernmost part of Europe, the weather can be fine even in the depths of winter so the Costa de la Luz attracts visitors all year round for either short or long stays. The area easily has enough attractions to fill a two-week holiday and you could keep yourself busy for much longer.
Vejer de la Frontera area
The beautiful hilltop village of Vejer is situated about 5 miles inland just off the main road from Tarifa to Cadiz. It is one Andalucia's white villages or pueblo blancos and has been described as one of the most beautiful in Spain. The population of around 8,000 is small enough to limit the numbers of visitors but big enough to sustain many local services.
The old town is a substantial size and has numerous sights; the best way to experience it is to just wander around and discover the attractions by chance. In fact the main attraction of Vejer is the narrow streets and whitewashed houses themselves but add shops, views, cafes and restaurants to the mix and you can see why it makes a really good base.
During the last 5 years Vejer has become a popular haunt of artists, which has given rise to an increasing number of galleries, jewellers, and craft shops. Restaurants include Spanish, Italian, Moroccan, and French, with many Tapas and cafe bars in the streets, squares and terraces. On a practical note there is a supermarket, banks, fruit shops, fishmongers, butchers, dvd rental, bike hire, clothes and sportshops etc.
How to get there
There are 4 airports to which you can fly from the U.K. Jerez which is served by Ryanair from Stansted and Gibraltar, by BA & Monarch are the nearest ,both around 80 km. Malaga ( 2 hours) is served by many airlines and is connected to Vejer by a motorway to Algeciras and then a fast road direct to Vejer. You can also fly to Seville ( 2 hours) with Ryanair and Spanair.

It has ample surrounding lounge areas. The small pool is ideal for kids.

Eating out doors is a pleasure either on the terrace to the front of the house or on the rooftop terrace. Perfect for barbecue ( supplied ). Guestbook for Vejer Townhouse
I would highly recommend the Stephen property in Vejer to anyone thinking of visiting the area. It is in a quiet residential part of town but is only a 30 second walk to the local shop and about 2 minutes from the local supermarket. 5 minutes gets you into the the heart of this beautiful hillto town. Vejer is within easy driving of the coast and some fabulous beaches only 10-25 minutes away. The properry itself is spacious, well furnished, very clean and has all the amenities you could want, I especially like the rooftop terrace with its views to the surrounding countryside. It is a beautiful part of Spain which I intend to return to in the future and will certainly be staying in the same property if it is available. D. Thomson
