The Costa de la Luz / Cadiz Province region
Vejer is surrounded by the Las Brenas and Marismas Natural Parks, and the beautiful sandy beach of El Palmar is 10km away. Inland are the historic towns of Medina Sidonia, Alcale de los Gazules and Arcos de la Frontera, and along the coasts are the beaches of Los Canos de Meca, Cape Trafalgar, Barbate, Conil de la Frontera, Zahara de los Atunes and Tarifa. You can go whale watching in the Straits from Tarifa and see Catchalote, Finn Whales and Dolphins, and Orcas in August-September. Tarifa has spectacular beaches, sand dunes and forests as well being a favourite with kite and wind surfers.
Don't miss a trip to Jerez where you can visit many historic buildings including the Alcazar, Cathedral and Ayuntamineto, enjoy the numerous cafes and restaurants and take in a famous sherry bodega tour including a tasting finale.
Cadiz is well worth a day trip where you can enjoy the monuments, cathedral, museums, parks, squares and backstreets, as well as a wonderful and unusual view of the city from the camera obscura in the Torre Tavira. Cadiz Marine Park has an abundance of birdlife and you can paddle your own kayak or take a small boat through the dunes and waterways. Bird watching is also recommended in the many wetland areas including Las Salinas at Sancti Petri.
El Puerto de Santa Maria (62kms) can be reached by a ferry from Cadiz along the Rio Guadalete and was once a thriving port where shipowners built themselves luxurious palace-like houses which are still standing today including the Casa Palacio de Aranibar in Plaza Alfonso X. You can also visit the castle (Castillo San Marcos) and gothic church (Iglesia Mayor) as well as the Aquasherry Water Park.
Sanlucar de Barrameda is on the Rio Guadalquivir and has two historic castles (Castillo de Santiago and Castillo de Niebla). You can also take a boat from here or Cadiz to the Coto Donana (National Park) for a guided tour.
There are 5 Natural Parks (Parque Natural) within 30kms of Vejer where you can enjoy interesting walks and spectacular views. These parks are Parque Natural de Las Brenas, Parque Natural de Las Marismas, Parque Natural del Estrecho, Parque Natural de la Bahia de Cadiz and Alcornocales Natural Park.
Bolonia has a wonderful setting on the beach where there are roman ruins (Baelo Claudia) in excellent condition and a museum which are both free to EU passport holders. There is a Roman aquaduct at Santa Lucia where you can also enjoy a meal in one of the garden restaurants.
Tarifa is the southernmost town in Europe with fantastic views across to North Africa and the Rif Mountains on a clear day. The best view of Morocco is from the Castillo de Guzman el Bueno and the road from Algeciras through the mountains provides wonderful vistas from designated Miradors (viewpoints) off the road.
At Gibraltar you can take the cable car up the Rock to see the apes and explore the caves, visit the Botanic Garden, enjoy tax free shopping and experience a little bit of England in the middle of Spain.
For golf enthusiasts the 18 hole course of Montenmedio is 5km away and courses designed by Severiano Ballesteros at Novo Sancti Petri are a 20 minute drive. There are many other courses in the area and details can be provided on request.
Vejer de la Frontera / La Noria, Vejer area
This house is situated in the beautiful white town (pueblo blanco) of Vejer de la Frontera, 200m above sea level, close to the old windmills and feria ground. The town has many historic buildings with lots of Arab and Moorish influences and has been granted the status of an Area of Historic and Artistic Interest. Within the narrow winding streets of the old town there are numerous restaurants, bars, banks and shops.
Vejer's history dates back to roughly 400 BC and its stunning location above the Rio Barbate and close to the sea, alongside the natural good defences, emphasised its strong strategic position. One of the great pleasures of the town is just walking along the cobbled narrow streets between the tall white houses. The outline of the fortified walls can still be traced and through them are various archways that lead into the old town. Unlike other towns all the original gateways still exist and contribute to the everyday life of Vejer.
The alcazaba (castle) is one of many historic buildings tucked away down the narrow streets. The Divino Salvador Church is well worth a visit and enjoys excellent views across the town. The Plaza de Espana is probably the most famous landmark in the town and is a favourite place for locals and visitors. Surrounded by date palms and large bouganvilla bushes it is also known as the Plaza de los Pescaitos (Plaza of the Little Fish) from the goldfish that used to swim around the fountain. The Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) overlooks the square, as does the Casa del Juzgado which houses the magistrates office and Califa hotel. A number of houses have their own patio de vecinos (patio of neighbours) and in the Casa del Mayorazgo you can wander in and go up the tower (free - just leave a donation) to enjoy wonderful views of the town and surrounding countryside and coast.
Vejer has the bonus of being within close distance of many beaches but not being a seaside town. El Palmar beach is part of a 12kms stretch of golden sand which goes from Mangueta to Conil. You can also visit Trafalgar Bay (14 kms) which are dominated by the famous lighthouse, Los Canos (15kms) which is set in a natural cliff and backed by the Brenas Natural Park. Mangueta beach (11kms) is a unspoilt haven whilst Barbate (Playa del Carmen) (10kms) is a busy bustling town with lots of beachfront restaurants and cafes. Playa de Yerbabuena (11kms) gets its name from the fresh mint that grows in the pine forest behind the beach and is a stunning location under the Brena cliffs. Zahora beach (12kms) is very popular in the summer and Zahora de los Atunes (18kms) is the longest beach in the area, and finally Playa de los Alemanes (22kms) is found close to the millionaires areas of Atlanterra.
"...be sure to take time to visit Vejer, a classically white, Moorish-looking hill town set in a cleft between great protective hills that rear high above the raod from Tarifa to Cadiz...the drama of Vejer is in its isolation and its position, which gradually unfold before you...the place has a remoteness and Moorish feel as explicit as anywhere in Spain. There's a castle and a church of curiously mixed styles (mainly Gothic and Mudejar) but the main fascination lies in exploring the brilliant white and labyrinthine alleyways, wandering past iron-grilled windows, balconies and patios, and slipping into a succession of bars" (Rough Guides, Andalucia)
