Stable Cottage
£180–£280 / week
About the home
Stable Cottage is a recent conversion from a stable and hayloft. It offers total peace and tranquility, set on a 2 hectare (5 acres) smallholdiing called Les Bardinieres, it is surrounded by farmland and pasture, with a backdrop of forest. The property is bordered by a stream.
We aim to be as self-sufficient in food as is possible; to take food from pasture to plate. The food we raise is fresh and wholesome, we use as much as possible of what we produce and we know exactly what has gone into its production. Our produce will be available to buy should you wish to.
Many chateaux, Loire vineyards and wineries, museums, scenic cycle routes and numerous leisure activities in the area. All the towns have weekly markets, which sell local farmers' produce. There are 2 local golf courses - one 5 km away and the other 13 km away. There is also riding available locally, as well as fishing in lakes and rivers.
You can rediscover the joys of reading, card and board games, even jigsaw puzzles!! For those who might freak at absolutely no T.V. we have a DVD player and a few discs, but you can always bring your own. With all the surrounding countryside there is ample opportunity to walk, birdwatch and cycle.
Even if you have no particular desire to live our lifestyle, it is a perfect environment to forget 'real life' for a while. We have no T.V., no landline telephone and no broadband connection - so you really can get away from it all!!

Further details indoors:
One enters the property directly into the open plan kitchen/diner. Having been a stable it still has exposed beams, as does the living room adjacent to it. The ground floor is tiled throughout. The kitchen is well equipped with ample working surfaces, cupboards, drawers and a good selection of utensils and crockery, etc..
The lounge is a large, light and airy room, with French doors opening onto the outside of the property. There is a sofabed offering additional sleeping.
From the kitchen, the first floor is accessed by a 'miller's staircase' (escalier de meunier) and opens onto the mezzanine. This offers a further area for relaxing, with a double sofabed. The first floor has exposed pine flooring, with timber wainscoting. The bathroom has a water resistant tiled floor.
For clients concerned about animal allergies, this cottage has never had any animals living in it since its conversion.
Further details outdoors:
The cottage has a private garden (mainly lawn) of some 400 sq. metres. There is plenty of parking space. For those interested in finding out more about 'the Good Life' we welcome visitors to view our smallholding and its various activities. Every day is different and we work with the seasons and the weather.
The cottage is accessed by a 'chemin privee' (an unmetalled road) of approx. 300 metres. Our only neighbour is the farm, some 800 metres away. The lane at the top of the drive could be easily classified as a '4 cars an hour' road!
With the exception of the owners, who live and work on site, and their livestock, this property is totally private.

The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region

The Loire Valley is a UNESCO World heritage site. The UNESCO committee said that the Loire Valley is: "an exceptional cultural landscape, of great beauty, comprised of historic cities and villages, great architectural monuments - the Châteaux - and lands that have been cultivated and shaped by centuries of interaction between local populations and their physical environment, in particular the Loire itself."
The Loire Valley has it's own micro climate and is generally mild in the Winter and pleasantly hot in the Summer.
Angers - the capital city of the Maine et Loire Department is also the ancient capital of the region of Anjou and is thought to have existed even in the Roman era! With lots of historical and cultural interest it lies only 45 minutes drive from the Gite. The Chateau can take a whole afternoon to explore.
Le Mans is home to the "24 hour Classic" car race and rally is only a 45 minute drive away. Le Mans has one of the most stunning old quarters in France, overlooked by a beautiful cathedral. Le Mans offers plenty of sites of historic interest and also of local crafts such as Malicorne ceramics.
Touraine Wines are located near Tours and also nearby is the world famous Vouvray sparkling wine region. Tours is famous for its original medieval district, called 'le Vieux Tours'. It has a square with cosy pubs and restaurants, whose open-air tables fill the centre of the square. TheTown Hall and Tours Central Railway Station are also worth a visit.
Saumur, is 45 minutes away and is home to the Tank Museum is the home and National Riding School) as a result of it's long association with the French Military. Above the town is a wonderful Chateau which overlooks the Loire River, housing dungeons, a watchtower and former royal apartments which are open to the public. Saumur claims to have been the place where sparkling wine was invented. Whilst it doesn't have the global 'kudos' of Champagne, in our opinion the local 'Methode Traditionelle' wines compare very well to their more expensive cousins. This includes a Red sparkling wine, recommended to be eaten with Dark Chocolate; an acquired taste but worth trying! Also to be found along the river nearby are Museums dedicated to the Mushroom and to the (edible) Snail - a French delicacy.
The towns of La Fleche and Le Lude straddle Le Loir.
The Vaulandry / Turbilly area
Situated equidistant between the historic towns of Bauge, La Fleche and Le Lude (13 km), in beautiful countryside with forests and farmland. Many traditional tourist attractions are within easy driving distance - Saumur 35 km, Tours 55 km, Angers 45 km, Le Mans 55km (approx.). Many chateaux, Loire vineyards and wineries, museums, scenic cycle routes and numerous leisure activities in the area. All the towns have weekly markets, which sell local farmers' produce. There is fishing in the local rivers and lakes.
Bauge - 15th century 'Chateau de Bauge'; 16th century Apothecary; annual festival 'Opera de Bauge'; major cycle route 'La voie verte', horse riding and a highly recommanded golf course.
La Fleche - Zoological park with over 1200 animals in naturally wooded site; La Monnerie lake 160 acres of leisure park with beach and water sports; indoor pool.
Le Lude - 10th century fortress chateau, converted to a residence in the 15th century.

Easily accessible by road, some 2.5-4 hours due South from the channel ports of St Malo, Cherbourg, Caen and Le Havre.
If you want to see a little more of Northern France, or indeed if your preferred UK port is Dover/Folkestone then the journey from Calais/ Boulogne is around 5-6 hours. You can get to Calais & Boulogne with P&O, Sea France, Eurotunnel etc. We have our own route plan from Calais - please ask if you'd like to see it.
The easiest route is the Autoroute which essentially follows the coastline Southwesterly from Calais to Rouen, then turns South towards Le Mans. We are about 45 minutes drive South of Le Mans.
The autoroutes have regular 'aires' - places to stop with basic or more extensive facilities. Whether you need to have a break, need a comfort stop, a meal or fuel you'll find you don't need to travel more than about 30mins to come across one. If you travel at a more leisurely pace down the N roads (or smaller) there are a multitude of places to stop - from proper rest stops to road side cafe's, town centres and so on.
By Air from UK and Eire
To Tours
Ryanair fly daily into Tours from London Stansted or Manchester
To Nantes
Ryanair fly from East Midlands Airport, Dublin, Shannon and London Stansted into Nantes. Aer Arann fly to Nantes from Bristol, Cardiff and Cork.

Flybe fly into Rennes from Manchester, Southampton, Belfast International and Exeter, Aer Lingus flies from Dublin.
To Le Mans
For those with access to private/ chartered flights there is a small airport at Le Mans
Easyjet also fly from a number of UK destinations to Paris CDG International Airport
If you are flying in from further afield you will probably arrive in Paris. The house is Southwest of Paris, about 3 hours drive or a couple of hours if you use the TGV (fast train service), including the drive time from Tours or Le Mans.
We do recommend that you hire a car if you arrive in France by Air. The cottage is not on a local bus route!
Please note, air carriers change their regular flight destinations regularly. If you spot we are out of date - please let us know.
By Train from UK
You could also use Eurostar to Paris, and the TGV to Tours or Le Mans, from where you could hire a car. Total travel time from Paris should be 2-3 hours including the drive to the house.

Guestbook for Stable Cottage
As Stable Cottage is new to the market for 2012, we do not have any specific feedback - please come and try for yourselves.
We have had volunteers working on our smallholding and here are a few of their comments:
'Thank you for your amazing hospitality for two Paris and London city slickers. It has been super to experience a different way of life and a different way of eating ..... It is already a really spectacular place to stay and I can imagine that it will only get more so.....' Richard C. (Paris) July 2009
'...The forests here are magic; the fog that rolls in at night and slinks away in the mornings is magic. Thank you for the thick blankets and the extra slices of bread, for the great lengths to give me a taste of all your favourite dishes....' Sarah F. (USA) November 2009
'Staying at Les Bardinieres (the smallholding) I have been given a glimpse of a totally different way of life.....So, did I have a good three weeks? In a word ......absolutely, yes I did do!' Arwel (Anglesea) February 2010
'Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to experience Les Bardinieres. You generously invitied us into your home and graciously shared your lifestlye with us.........You always were willing to answer your questions and tell us about the farm, the animals and the area. The food was wonderful and we loved watching where it came from....' Anna and Joy (USA) June 2010
'...Keep working on you organic cred. and believing that what you are doing is right. This life isn't for everybody, but I think is the most rewarding in the end...' Nathan (Australia) September 2010.
