TRIPADVISOR CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE WINNER 2014

Located in a quiet street directly in the historical city center of Vasto. Only a couple of minutes walk from the many bars, restaurants and boutiques and from the main piazza in the pedestrian marble and cobbled streets. The town is situated just above the Adriatic coast of Italy in the unspoilt region of Abruzzo. Vasto is easily accessible from Pescara Abruzzo airport in 45 minutes, or from Rome in 3 hours by direct coach. The apartment is within walking distance 15 mins (down steps) of the pebble beach or 25 minutes walk (5 minutes by car/bus) to the sandy gentley sloping Vasto marina beach. The apartment is a large 70 sq m. open plan apartment on the ground floor of a typical Italian medieval town house, with opening windows to the front aspect, vaulted ceilings and antique brickwork. There is free street car parking 2 mins walk or car parking is available within a few minutes walk from the apartment in one of the many car parks in town should you need it. sleeps maximum 4 guests.

The apartment has a romantic feel with Art Deco furniture, fittings and silk and brocade soft furnishings, with plenty of space to relax and unwind. Recently refurbished, with lounge with double sprung sofa-bed, fully equipped kitchen and dining area (seating for 4), plus a large bedroom area with double bed. The apartment also has a separate shower wetroom (no curtain) set under the medieval vaulted brick ceiling. It is an ideal base for a couple wishing to explore the beautiful town and for a beach holiday too. The apartment is open-plan and therefore most suited to couples, but children are welcome as there is a sofa-bed in the lounge area which is separated by a curtain.(no wall so as to preserve the vaulted ceilings) If you require a separate bedroom, or wish to stay during the winter months, then please see our advert for the house also located in the Centro Storico only 5 mins walk from this apartment. (sleeps 4) ref. 324954.

Vasto marina beach is a huge sandy shallow sloping beach with water ideal for children. Here you can hire sunbeds and umbrellas and behind the beach there are snack bars and restaurants. You can also hire motor boats and pedalos from here. It is reachable by car or regular bus in 5 minutes. It holds the prestigious Blue Flag award. The closest beach is reachable down steps and is a 15 minute walk. It is a small rock and pebble beach ideal for snorkeling and fishing. Aqualand water park is only 15 minutes away by bus and is ideal for a day with children.

If you are looking for 'real Italy' then look no further than Abruzzo. Just don't forget to bring your phrase book! Vasto has everything right on it's doorstep and is ideal for both a city break or a few weeks in the sun on the beach. Unlike most hill towns in Abruzzo, a car is not necessary here as everything you need for a fantastic holiday is right here in Vasto. The Abruzzo region

Vasto is on the Adriatic coast of the Chieti region of Abruzzo and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many national parks and nature reserves, with caves and grottoes nearby, both inland and by the sea, and the Appenine mountains are only 1 h 15 mins by car should you wish to explore further afield and drive up to the Maiella mountain. The cavellone caves are a fantastic day out in the summer, and a break from the heat in July or August. The view from the cable car over the mountains is not to be missed. Vasto has a micro climate and is sunny and warm for most of the year. April and May are beautiful, with many days in the 70's ( low 20's) and the flowers and plants are blooming. June is my favourite month with warm sea and deserted beaches. Then comes the high heat and humidity in the summer months of July and August, which is a great time to visit for the beaches and the sea, where the sea temperature rises to 80 degrees (26) and the activities that the town arrange for the visiting Romans, such as jazz in the park, rock bands in the piazza, carnival, local pageant, and wine tastings etc, most of which are free to attend. September is quiet when all the Romans have left, but the summer is by no means over, and the beaches are once again deserted and quiet, but with high temperatures and perfect for a peaceful beach holiday. October is still summer here, and you can still expect weather similar to that in May if not warmer. Whichever month you choose to come, you can be sure of a wonderful stay!

Vasto

Vasto town is built on the Roman ruins of Histonium, and is a Medieval town with great charm and character. There is plenty to see and do in the town itself, churches and cathedrals, the Roman baths with mosaics, a Medieval Castle now housing a wine bar and restaurant, the lovely park with it's large duck pond and fountain and the Palace. There is also a running track, a tennis club, and indoor swimming pool and fitness club with gym, all within a few minutes walk of the apartment. If you are a foodie, then you will be in heaven in Vasto! Our local speciality is Brodetto alla Vastese, which is a fish stew, consisting of various types of locally caught fresh fish, prawns, langoustines, mussles, clams all cooked in local olive oil, garlic and tomato. Fresh fish is a speciality of Vasto as it has always been an important fishing port and the locally caught fresh fish is the best you will ever have! Another local fish dish is Seabass baked in the oven on a bed of rosemary potatoes. If you are not a fish lover, there is always porchetta - whole roasted suckling pig stuffed with rosemary, herbs and almonds or try a tagliata - sliced steak with cherry tomatoes, rocket and parmesan cheese. Don't forget to order a glass of local Pecorino or Trebbiano white wines to go with your fish, or a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo red to go with your steak! You can even visit the local vineyard here in Vasto for the afternoon for a wine tasting and a spot of lunch. On a Saturday morning there is a local produce market selling cheese, cured meats and fresh fruit and vegetables from the local farms. It is full of local characters and a great photo opportunity. There is also another Saturday market selling a variety of goods including leather bags and belts, clothes and shoes. There are plenty of pavement cafes and bars and restaurants to while away the days in, along with the many high class boutiques to window shop in, including Burberry, Gucci Jewellery, Marella, MaxMara and of course a huge array of beautiful shoe shops! There are museums, art galleries, a costume museum, archaeological gardens in the Palazzo. A large portion of the town is pedestrian only and therefore safe and quiet. A favourite pastime of the Vastese is the passegiata or evening stroll, where everybody dresses in their finest and strolls around the town chatting and stopping for aperativo with friends. Although Vasto is little known in Europe, it is an Italian secret, and a favourite summer destination of the wealthy Romans, who have been coming here for years, many having second homes here. It offers plenty to do for a long weekend or with the added bonus of the beach, a fortnights holiday. The Tremiti Islands are reachable by ferry (50 mins) which goes daily from Termoli and Vasto port in the summer. Here you can sit on the beach or hire a boat and go snorkeling or diving in the crystal clear water. Rome is less than 3 hours away, and can be reached by air-conditioned coach from Vasto bus station should you wish to have a day trip or over night stay there.Cultural events occur throughout the year, with festivals of music, classical and rock concerts, Jazz in the park, film festival and food festivals, along with historical pageantry dating back to the 17th century. The local saints day of San Michele is a festa held on the last weekend in September and is a massive celebration with bands, music, market stalls all ending the the biggest and best firework display you have ever seen! Almost all of these are free to attend or watch. Aqualand water park (15 minutes by bus)is one of the biggest in the region and has many fun slides and amusements for children. The closest beach is pebble and rock and ideal for snorkeling. The Blue Flag sandy Marina beach is gently shelving and ideal for children. Here you can find all amenities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, toilet and shower facilities, restaurants, snackbars, gelateria, motor boat hire and pedalo hire. There really is no need for a car here as everything you could want is on your doorstep for either a weekend city break or for 2 weeks on the beach! We are English, and now live close by and are always on hand should you need us. We provide a full information brochure in the apartment with areas of local interest, maps, recommended restaurants and a full programme of events for during your stay. We meet and greet each and every guest on arrival, and show them to the apartment no matter what the time of arrival.

"it was exactly as described except the location was even better for us"

This is a large one bedroom apartment in the very old town district of Vasto. It provided us with the best access to local shopping from food, both market produce and restaurants, to clothes, history and by short bus ride or a more challenging walk - two types of beach, we have found in Italy in many years and many trips. It was quiet in a busy and active town and was good value. To get to Vasto try as recommended to us by the owners; Air to Rome, train to Rome coach station and coach direct to Vasto.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. We are so glad that you had such a great time in our apartment, and that you liked Vasto so much that you will be back next year! I would just like to point out that the easiest way to get to Vasto is from London Stansted airport to Pescara airport and then a 50 minute taxi journey direct to Vasto. I suggested the Rome route for you as you live too far from Stansted airport to make this option viable. There are flights from Gatwick and other UK and International airports into Rome, making this option easy for anyone coming from outside of London and from other International destinations. You can then get the shuttle bus from the airport in Rome to the coach station. (unless of course you want to spend a few hours or days in Rome, as you did) The coach runs direct from Rome to Vasto and you can walk from the coach station in Vasto to the apartment. We look forward to seeing you and your family next year! regards, Judy and James

"Great apartment, great location, wonderful hosts!"

Highly recommended! We loved our stay in Vasto and the apartment was great. Right in the heart of the historical district, 20 min walk to the beach. We usually walked down to the beach and took the bus up for 3 euro. Hope to stay again!

Thank you for your review. We're glad you both loved your stay here in our beautiful town of Vasto, and we look forward to seeing you back here in the future.
