The Normandy / Calvados region

Normandy has something for everyone. With beautiful rolling countryside and a mild climate, the region is famous for its dairy produce and apples, used for the production of cider and Calvados, the local ‘firewater’ from which this part of Normandy gets its name.

The many and varied outdoor activities include walking, cycling, horse riding, swimming, golf, tennis, fishing, paragliding, bungee jumping and much more. There are plenty of places of historical interest to visit such as the Mont St Michel, the D-Day landing beaches, William the Conqueror’s castle at Falaise, and the famous tapestry of the town of Bayeux.

There are also the shops, cafes, museums and theatres of Caen, small fishing villages and beautiful beaches to the north and west coasts, country houses and gardens, zoos and children's’ attractions.

Vassy area

Vassy is a large friendly village with a range of shops, all within walking distance, which include boulangeries (delicious bread and pastries), charcuteries (meats and salads), a small supermarket, hairdressers, florist, papershop, cafes, bars and a bank. Other facilites include a small indoor swimming pool, sports hall and skate park.

The nearby town of Condé sur Noireau holds an excellent weekly market, and boasts a sports complex with swimming pool and tennis courts for hire. Sixteen kilometres to the west is the larger town of Vire, with its many restaurants, bars and shops. During the summer months it also holds regular street activities, markets, and firework displays.

Situated close to the Bocage and Suisse Normande areas, Vassy is ideally situated as a base from which to explore Normandy, for somewhere to stay while looking for your own French property, or for those who simply wish to relax and enjoy the ‘French experience’. Within a few kilometres radius there are forest walks, lakes, horse riding, cycling, golf, canoeing, fishing and even paragliding!

French cookery demonstrations by a local French lady, and opportunities to improve your French conversation are also available.
