The rooms of this apartment are on the first floor of a recently restored sixteenth century building with picturesque views of the lake. The hall, the bedroom, the bathroom with shower and the kitchen-sitting room with fireplace are bright and furnished with good taste, in a modern and functional style
No car is needed as you explore the ancient town of Varenna. Archways and steep, narrow lanes (which eventually end at the lake), beautiful ancient buildings and the elegant atmosphere grace this lovely town.

The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
The beauty of the place is clearly evident in its ancient buildings, its romantic views, its impressive nature. A distinctive feature of Varenna is the mildness of the climate, which is proved by the olive trees, the cypress trees and other botanic species typical of the lake and is due to its special exposure: leant to the mountain, the village is facing south and west, so it is sunny and warm till late in the evening.
As well as beautiful views and restaurants, Lake Como also offers activities such as waterskiing, windsurfing, trekking and cycling.
Varenna area
In the heart of Varenna's old quarter, just little steps from the water and the main square, the apartment looks onto a picturesque cobblestone pedestrian-only archway leading straight to the beach and the lakeside with the beautiful pubs, restaurants, shops and art galleries.
All of Varenna's main attractions are only a few minutes' walk away. Villa Cipressi: This architectural complex consists of a park and buildings from various periods, and is near Lecco and the central lake. The gardens are also open to the public.
Villa Monastero: Converted from a 13th Century convent, this congress centre has terraces and walkways overlooking the lake as well as beautiful statues.
Castello di Vezio: This castle is found overlooking Varenna, and although it is reachable by car, you would miss out on a beautiful walk through breathtaking scenery. The castle is a small collection of houses carved in the rock, and may date back to the year 1,000. It is currently home to about 50 people, and faces the main piazza. Nature-lovers can also be taken on a tour to see the birds of prey living in the castle; owls, buzzards, and falcons among others. There is also the "Feudo" restaurant, where you can enjoy local wine and specialities.
The train station is a short walk (800 metres from Maria's house). The passenger and car ferries are also minutes away, reaching the exquisite villages, gardens and villas that dot the lakeshore. From Varenna's central position one can easily get to all other locations on the lake, such as Menaggio and Bellagio, the most elegant and international town of the Lake of Como, located just between the two branches of the lake. The lake of Como itself and the nearby area offer the best in skiing, windsurfing, hiking and bicycling. Maria's House is available 12 months of the year, and rates are seasonal. How to get there
Easyjet offer flights to Milano Malpensa and Milano Linate airport from Gatwick at competitive prices, likewise British Airways from Heathrow airport: see www.travelsupermarket.com for the best deals.
BY TRAIN FROM THE AIRPORT: - From Milano Malpensa airport (50km from Varenna), take the blue "Malpensa Shuttle" coach for Milano Centrale train station, which runs every 20 minutes from 7am till 9pm.
If you are coming from Milano Linate airport (45km from Varenna), take the blue "Shuttle" coach for Milano Centrale, which runs every 30 minutes from 7am till 7pm.
- From Milano Centrale station, take the train for Sondrio or Tirano. Both of them end at Varenna; if you let us know your arrival time we can meet you at the station.
BY CAR FROM THE AIRPORT: From the Milan ring road, take the Viale Zara - Monza - Lecco exit. You will then be on the SS 36 motorway, or "superstrada". Once you have reached Lecco, wihtout leaving the motorway, follow signs for Sondrio. Take the first exit after Lecco which says "Varenna-Ferry Boat". After driving through a couple of small towns on the lake, or about 16km, you will see the sign for Varenna on the left.
