The Lake Como region

ENGLISH VERSION:

Appointed as a fishing village in 769 was an ally in the era of Commons in Milan, was destroyed by Como in 1126 He received the exiles from the Island Comacina, which suffered similar fate in 1169: was devastated, its castle and its churches destroyed .

The neighborhood where they took refuge was called Insula nova, a name which was later extended to the entire village, which soon became one of the richest in the lake.

Even today, every year we celebrate the exodus of comacini and the reception of Varenna, on Saturday and Sunday of the week that falls on June 24, the feast of St. John. The lake is brightly lit with thousands of lumaghitt, abandoned floating candles on the water, as if to recall the forlorn souls who sailed from shore to shore, fleeing from their homes in flames.

The famous craftsmen called the Masters of Como are the descendants of these people.

As part of the Archdiocese of Milan, Varenna is the Ambrosian rite Roman instead.

Varenna

(Antoine Claude Pasquin (detto Valery), Voyages historiques..., Vol. 1, p. 223, Parigi, 1831)

ENGLISH VERSION

A special feature of the river is its regular intermittently from March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation and village) until October 7 (Madonna of the Rosary and the patroness of Varenna) that motivated the nickname "River of the two Madonnas." This intermittency is due to the fact that Fiumelatte is the overflow of a karst system, not yet reached by anyone, which begins in Moncodeno (Grignone). In 1992, a staining with fluorescein (non-toxic dye) into the Abyss W Women, located along the crest of Piancaformia, demonstrated the link between Fiumelatte and karst cavities of Grignone. [1]

The cave at the source of Fiumelatte and charming environment in which it flows have favored the emergence of some legends.

It was already known as "Fiumelaccio" in the Codex Atlanticus of Leonardo da Vinci who was very intrigued by this phenomenon.

"It's the Fiumelaccio, which falls from the top more than 100 arms from the vein Whence, lead to the lake, with inistimabile din and uproar. »

(Leonardo da Vinci)

Other characters who described the particularities were Pliny the Elder and Spallanzani.

Major attraction for the first visitors, who often write in their travel notes. Among the many curious observation of the French writer Valery who passed in 1827:

[Missing the translation in Italian] »

(Antoine Claude Pasquin (said Valery), Voyages historiques ..., Vol. 1, p. 223, Paris, 1831)

From the cemetery of Varenna, on the left, there is an indication for the source of the Fiumelatte where you can peek into the darkness of the cave.
