The Piedmont region
The house is located in one of the most beautiful areas in North West Italy, not only for the famous Lago Maggiore but also for the smaller Lago d'Orta, a jewel with its charming town of Orta, and for the hills of the Novara province well known for their special wines like Ghemme and Gattinara (and many others).
We all love Italian food. But few of us have an opportunity to enjoy the real hidden gems, food and wines, that hardly make the headlines because of very limited production. This area of Northern Italy is a goldmine for wines, cheese and hundreds of products that you can easily rank among the most sophisticated in the world.
If you like trekking or walking in the mountains, several valleys are not far away including Val Grande, Val Antigorio, Val Bognanco, Valsesia and Val Formazza, also home to a great Wells & Spa facility.
If you don't mind driving a bit further, skiing in the Alps all year round is also possible with a 2.5 hour trip to Valle d'Aosta.
The city of Milan is only 50 Km away. Shopping in Milan is great, and sightseeing even better. But if you get tired of the Duomo, La Scala, La Galleria, Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper and the fashion district remember that, from Milan, Venice is only 3 hours away by train, and in 2 hours you can be on the seaside beaches in Genova.
The house is ideally located for a swim in the lake or to enjoy its bustling night life, eat in the best restaurants and enjoy the local products.
Boats from Arona can take you to every corner of the lake, and to the Isole Borromee and up into Switzerland.
A visit to the gardens of Isola Madre or Villa Taranto are a must if you are a flower enthusiast, as well as the ones in Villa Pallavicino, where kids can also meet animals of different types.
A cable car from Stresa will take you to Mottarone, a close mountain where you can ski in the winter and enjoy the 7 lake view during fantastic summer walks.
For golfers, just a few miles from the house there is the Castelconturbia club (10 min drive), the Golf Bogogno club (15 min drive), the Arona Golf Club (5 min. drive) and the Golf Des Iles Borromées club (30 min drive).
Various swimming pools are available in the area, but for a smashing water experience Ondaland is your park (approx. 30 min drive). Kids and adults can also visit the Safari Park (5/10 min drive from the house), home to lions, snakes and other wild animals. If history of flight is your passion, visit Volandia at Malpensa airport (15 min drive from the house) and try the experience of a real flight simulator.
On the other side of the lake, the Angera Castle and the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso are only a boat trip away, though you can reach them driving only 15 minutes from the house.
If shopping in the lake towns or in the Milan fashion center is not enough, numerous outlets with great prices and the best brands are in the area. Vicolungo is the closest one, at 30/40 min by car. But you can also shop in one of the top Switzerland outlets, FoxTown, in Mendrisio, only 45 min from Milan and with daily tours from Milan available.

"Great location, home away from home."
The apartment was well equipped with large bedrooms and garden for the kids to play in. A nice location, with convenient access to Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta but away from the touristy parts. Cinzia was very friendly and welcoming, able to answer all our questions and provide good restaurant recommendations. Dont miss the restaurant down by the river. Wonderful food, views and popular with locals rather than tourists which we took to be a good sign! If I had any criticism, it would be that the bathroom could do with updating, but I loved the 1930's / 40's (i think) style of the apartment personally. I would definitely recommend La Viralda - a charming home with so much more character than a large hotel.

"A lovely spacious appartment which is a good base to explore the area"
The appartment has lots or room and feels like a home. Nice furnishings and good kitchen facilities. Cinzia was very wecloming and was helpful when we asked for a recommendation for a wedding anniversary meal (Ristorante Verbano on Isole Pescatori - lovely). I used the washing machine, for which she provided detergent, and dried the clothes on the small kitchen veranda. This was very useful as we had already been in Slovenia for a week. I was suprised that we didn't have any problems with mosquitoes, and we left the windows open all night. The portable room fans were usefull and sufficient even when the day temperature was about 34 C . The house is private and not overlooked, with rural views to the rear. You are totally reliant on your car, and there are no reastaurants in walking distance. There are very big supermarkets within 5 mins by car. The only way this appartment could be improved further would be if it had a swimming pool - there is plenty of space in the garden for one!

"No empty promises"
La Viralda is the perfect for those who seek privacy and easy access to populated areas at the same time. The large garden provides enough privacy, the property itself being situated near the quiet stable pasture and on the outskirts of the forest. The surroundings are quiet and provide real break from crowded city life. Yet it is also close enough to the main road leading to Castelletto Ticino center and nearby town of Arona on the shores of Lago Maggiore. Reaching nearest beach takes only few minutes, while for those who wish to visit nearby cities and even neighboring countries, it is perfectly connected to main roads and highways. The property itself is clean, very well equipped and well kept. It is also amazingly decorated and ideal for allergy sufferers. The property guardian, Mrs Cinzia Tosi has provided regular change of bed-sheets and towels, something you do not encounter very often while renting homes in Italy in the summer. There are simply no empty promises, everything is as it should be or was presented in the description and guarantees enjoyable stay. We felt really welcomed from the start and all our needs were well taken care of. I would recommend La Viralda whether you are looking for a quiet escape, family time and laid-back hours by the lake or vice versa busy, adventurous and entertaining stay. For us it was both and more than anything made us wish we could actually live there.
