The Midi-Pyrenees / Lot region

Located in the South West of France, the Midi Pyrenees sweeps north from the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrénées at the Basque borderland of Spain to the foothills of the Massif Central. With an average of 2000 hours of sunshine per year, it is one of the sunniest regions of France. With its gentle climate, spring comes early, and has a feel of summer to it, while autumn often enjoys the warmth of an Indian summer long into October. The terrain ranges from rolling farmland, vineyards and orchards to dramatic landscapes scored by spectacular gorges, rocky outcroppings, and extended plateaus.
From its fertile farms and forests, Midi-Pyrénées has developed a special cuisine. It is the home of authentic Roquefort cheese, foie gras, truffles, and the best cassoulet and duck dishes in the world. It produces Cahors and Gaillac wines, as well as Armagnac, the golden colored brandy, prized by connoisseurs.
The Midi Pyrenees is steeped in history, from the many romantic, medieval villages, fortress towns and churches, to the prehistoric painted caves of Peche Merle
The Varaire area
The property is nestled in the southeast corner of Lot and is nearby the borders of Aveyron, Tarn and Tarn et Garonne.
Many of the most well known and prettiest villages in France are a short drive away. Visit St Cirq Lapopie, St Antonin de Noble Val, Cordes sur Ciel, Rocamadour, and Belcastel to name a few.
One of the most interesting outings of the week is to visit the local markets. On Sunday visit the market at nearby Limogne en Quercy (also famous for its truffle market) or St Antonin. Saturdays, try the market in Cahors (the capital of Lot), and on Thursdays, visit the market in Villefranche de Rouergue.
Recreational opportunities abound. The river Lot is considered one of the most beautiful in France and it is well known for its kayaking and boating. There are several golf courses in Lot/Aveyron, the closest being 20 min away in Villefranche de Rouergue. There are lakes nearby at Parisot and Bannac.
Many come to the area for walking, cycling and hiking. There are many lovely trails through the forests. As well, Varaire is on the path of one of the Pilgrim Roads to Santiago de Compstela (Way of St James), the Chemin du Puy. The Way of St James has existed for over a thousand years and was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during medieval times. It is the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried.

Le Nid is a beautiful old property in the small village of Varaire, which is on the pilgrimage route of St Jacques de Compostelle. We stumbled upon it by pure chance on a website and are so pleased that we did. The cottage itself is immaculate and has character in abundance such as old oak beams and a huge open fireplace. There is a lovely garden area with plenty of places to relax and eat out in the sunshine, which we did on more than one occasion, even at Easter time. The cottage has everything anyone could need, making it a real 'home from home'. Le Nid is a good base to explore the Lot Valley and the Aveyron Valley and wow, what an area! There are plenty of things to see and do, from walks and scenic drives to local Chateaux, from rivers to markets and old villages. We found the owner of the cottages to be efficient and helpful but also lovely and friendly. We would not hesitate in highly recommending Le Nid and the Lot Valley for a great holiday experience. Quiet cottage in lovely rural village and surrounding area with many of Frances most beautiful medieval towns all within easy driving distance. The cottage is 17th century with a mezzanine floor for the bedroom which is the only reason it can not really be recommended for elderly or disabled. A romantic cottage with a private garden and pool which we managed to use a few times even though we were not blessed with the best weather! The local people are very freindly and helpful and we were even handed cherries and truffles whilst on our evening walks after dinner! We ate out a couple of times and the food was delicious each time. Lovely two weeks and good value. Thank you Marion & Graham for looking after us. |
