The Gauteng region

The Sotho word, Gauteng, meaning "Place of Gold", is the name of the Pretoria - Witwatersrand - Vaal Triangle, one of the largest industrial regions in the southern hemisphere. Vibrant, exciting Johannesburg, the provincial capital of Gauteng offers visitors a large selection of recreational, cultural and historical attractions. Situated some 50 km north of Johannesburg, Pretoria is renowned for its colourful gardens, shrubs and trees, particularly beautiful in spring when jacarandas envelop the avenues in mauve.

Gauteng is said to offer one of the world’s best climates: summer days are warm and wind free (relatively) and winter days are crisp and clear. Johannesburg and Pretoria differ in temperature by about 2% (Pretoria being the warmer of the two). The history of Johannesburg extends back to 1886 when George Harrison discovered gold on the farm Langlaagte. Gold Diggers and fortune hunters arrived in droves and soon a tent town had sprung up, which later became the city that is now South Africa's main commercial centre.Gold rush shantytowns sprang up and were rapidly transformed into modern concrete cities, Johannesburg became "The Gold Capital of the World", and the entire country was catapulted into an economic boom. The revenue generated from gold, most valuable of South Africa's exports, has enabled the country to develop its impressive industrial, commercial and financial strength. Today, in a great, still growing concrete sprawl, Gauteng comprises the commercial heart of South Africa. But much of the region has escaped industrial development. In dozens ofSouth Africa has won the right to host the 2010 World Cup finals after holding off the challenge of Morocco. The announcement of the vote by Fifa president Sepp Blatter in Zurich was greeted with delight from the South African bid delegation including Nelson Mandela .... quiet retreats and leisure resorts, city-dwellers find relaxation and a welcome respite from day-to-day routine.

Vanderbijlpark area

Dr HJ van der Bijl, a brilliant young scientist working in the United States, was called back to South Africa in 1920 by Prime Minister Jan Smuts to advise the government on planning South Africa'a industrial development. Van der Bijl oversaw the inauguration of the Iron and Steel Corporations's (ISCOR) first plant at Pretoria in 1934 and, with increased demand, 10 000ha was bought to build a large steelworks and model city for its employees - Vanderbijlpark.

The steelworks, the largest works in the Southern Hemisphere, began operating in 1947 and the town, which forms Gauteng's border along the Vaal River, was proclaimed in 1949 and attained municipal status in 1952.

Vanderbijlpark's 500 000 trees shade streets named after scientists, engineers, composers, poets, writers and medical practitioners. They house one of the most cosmopolitan communities in the country.

Most importantly Vanderbijlpark is situated so close to the Airport that one can easily reach it and plan a holiday at any destination of your dreams. The owner would most gladly assist in the planning of a life time experience.

Guestbook

We have experienced a wonderful summer Christmas, filled with sunshine on beautiful beaches, wild life, braais, and drinking of sundowners at sunset. We will never forget this in our life time. Will be back as soon as it is possible.
Harald Brovold and Family - Hamar Norway

Never in our wildest dream did we think that we would be able to enjoy our visit to SOUTH AFRICA as much as we did. Our children's visit to your sons school were a highlight to them. Even the visit to a township made us more appreciative of what we have in our own country. The weather was wonderful and also the visit to the Mozambique beach. We will always treasure the memories of our holiday and hope to be back one day
