Cottonwood Canopy
About the home
This 1907 heritage house gem has been lovingly restored by its previous architect owner to suit modern standards, while the rare old beautiful character has been carefully preserved.
The private suite, Cottonwood Canopy is ideal and economical for couples and small families with 800 sq ft of available space, not including the spacious front and back decks. There are flexible sleeping arrangements for up to 6. The master bedroom features a king sized bed and a closet with a beautiful bay window that lets light in from the west. The living room is spacious and offers a view of the front garden from the large, south-facing bay window. The living room also offers sleeping arrangements for up to 4 people with a double pullout sofa and 2 single pullout sofas. There is a TV with full cable and a DVD player, a CD player, and telephone with free long distance calls. A laptop computer with high speed wireless internet is also included.
The heritage bathroom couldn't be more charming with its tiled floor, shower and roomy clawfoot tub. The kitchen is large and open enough to enjoy cooking, socializing and dining. It is fully equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, electric oven, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, electric kettle, and a full selection of cooking and eating implements that will make you feel right at home. There is also a high chair available.
The garden in the back is extra large for the area and fully fenced in for privacy and safety for children. There is abundant outdoor seating on the back deck and on the garden patio, as well as a full size outdoor table for picnicking in the garden. There is even seating on top of the garden shed that enables one to look out over
downtown Vancouver, which is particularly beautiful at night.
Cottonwood Gardens is located in Strathcona which is Vancouver's oldest residential neighborhood. This amazing and unique neighborhood has a sense of community that can't always be found even in a small town. An amazing example of this is that the neighbourhood was earmarked for demolition in the early 1950s as part of an urban renewal program. Strathcona would have been transformed into blocks of identical apartment buildings, but development was stopped by opposition from the community. Thanks to the strength of the community and their intense love for their neighborhood, Strathcona is still filled with late 19th and early 20th century architecture which is a relative rarity in Vancouver. Walking through the neighborhood, you will see that many houses in Strathcona are designated heritage houses, and Cottonwood Gardens is no exception.
We are very fortunate to have all the best areas of Vancouver within walking distance, while still being hidden away in the quaint historic neighborhood of Strathcona. Cottonwood is just minutes from Chinatown, Commercial Drive, Main Street, and Downtown Vancouver. From cafés, sports and entertainment, to beaches and forests; it is all a walk away!

Guestbook for Cottonwood Canopy
Dear Alex, Camille & Gabe - how wonderful this place is! What a fabulous location in a fascinating and beautiful neighborhood and city (close to great ice-cream too!)! Excellent bed! Thank you for everything. We'll be back for sure! So much to see and do. Gail and Craig, Anchorage, Alaska, USA, March, 2011.
First; the owners are exceptional! Beyond helpful, professional and quick to respond. Though they live on the premises, you would NEVER know they were there! The home feels very safe and cozy. It has a character and warmth that's lacking in motels and hotels. It felt like I was at my own home and all the amenities were there and then some! The neighborhood was so residential and quiet, that it was hard to believe that we could EASILY walk to much of the downtown area. The bus system or taxis were easy to understand and use too. I didn't even bother to drive my car anywhere. House is VERY clean and well maintained. Backyard is beautiful. Photos are accurate, but don't quite do the place justice. Beds are very comfy and the inside temperature was easy to adjust; so we were never too hot or too cold. I would absolutely recommend this place to family and friends! I plan to rent this place again in the near-future. As for attractions, etc.; there are SO MANY things to do and see, it's hard to choose. Just about anything you want to do is easy to get to. There are various ethnic restaurants within walking distance. I definately say you must go to La Casa Gelato, which is less than 2 blocks from the house. It is an ice cream, sorbet, fro-yo, gelato shop with maybe 100 flavors. They let you have lots of free samples too. You can get pizza, Indian and Asian food delivered to the house. Or walk to China Town and eat in at Hon's. Excellent food at a reasonable price. If you like to bicycle, this house is the perfect place to stay. The neighborhood and beyond have more bicyclists than I've ever seen, yet they are all respectful of pedestrians; as are the 4-wheel vehicles. Hard to believe there is so much activity in the area, because it's very very quiet and serene. BTW: I had NEVER met the owners or stayed here before; yet I felt instantly at ease and felt like I was staying with my favorite relatives. Alex even went out and swept snow off my car that had accumulated the night before. And he shoveled the porch and sidewalk to my car. I've rented a number or vacation rentals and this one rates in my Top 5! I'll be back for sure! Shelly, Snohomish, Washington, USA, February. 2011.
Thank-you, Alex and Camille, for opening up your house to us. We had the nicest time. This is a great walking neighborhood. The walk to Chinatown was "doable" and the food at Hons was worth it! The house was inviting as well as the hosts! Bev, Marysville, Washington, USA, February 2011.
Thanks for the wonderful accommodations! We enjoyed food from "Uprising Bread" & "Sweet Cherubim" on Commercial. Favourite park - Pacific Spirit. Best crab fishing...Belcarra! Hope to return, soon. Fred & Lorraine - Grimsby, Ontario, January, 2011.
