The British Columbia region
"Beautiful British Columbia" as the Province has been known for nearly a century truly lives up to its name. It is a place of high snow-capped mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. To the north is Alaska and the Yukon, to the east the Prairie Provinces and to the south, the US states of Washington and Montana. The western edge of BC meets the Pacific Ocean and it is this coastline which gives the Province so much of its majesty. Between the Rocky Mountains at the east and the Coastal Mountains of the west, lies an area of desert, part of of which, the Okanagan, has become one of the finest fruit and wine growing areas in the whole of North America. BC is rich in natural resources, from precious minerals like gold and silver, to lumber, natural gas and oil. The pristine countryside is home to an abundance of wildlife such as black and grizzly bears, elk, caribou, beavers, cougars, wild goats and eagles. The oceans are home to humpback, grey and killer whales, sea lions, salmon, oysters and prawns. The natural beauty of BC makes it now one of the world's top tourist destinations.
Vancouver area
Vancouver is a world-class city surrounded by water. It is one of the best places to dine and experience foods which are a fusion of both eastern and western cuisines. The City has a lot to offer all ages. For children, Science World and the Aquarium are must visit places. For all the family the wonderful 1000 acre Stanley Park is the heart and lungs of the city. Its sea wall offers cycling, roller-blading or just walking. Granville Island Market is a place to buy the freshest food and hand made crafts whilst being entertained by numerous street performers. Here you can take a water taxi to explore False Creek or a fast boat out into the Georgia Strait to look for pods of killer whales. Grouse Mountain overlooks the City and is a day and night, summer and winter venue, traveling there by cable car. It offers glorious views over the City and has its own resident grizzly bears. Close to Grouse is the Capilano Suspension Bridge which is ideal for kids who like a fright!
The coastal village of Horseshoe Bay is just 5 mins. away and a fun place to visit with the glorious cliffside park and beach at Whitecliffe. You can hire boats here and either fish for salmon or tour Howe Sound. Ferries run locally to Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast or to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Drive to Victoria from here or take another ferry located south of Vancouver.
Victoria is the capital of BC and offers a world top 10 museum, whale watching tours and the renowned Butchard Gardens. Between the mainland and Vancouver Island is the Inside Passage which is the main waterway used by the cruise liners traveliing to Alaska. These waters teem with life and there are nearly 6000 islands, of which the lower 400, known as the Southern Gulf Islands, stretch between Victoria and Seattle and can be explored via a network of ferries.
Squamish, which is half way to Whistler, calls itself the Outdoor Capital of Canada, offering almost every kind of outdoor activity on water and in the mountains. From hang gliding to wind surfing, from kayaking to white water rafting everything is here, including if you dare, a top rated climb up the granite 'Chief'. The road to Squamish and on to Whistler is known as the "Sea to Sky Highway" and is famed as one of the world's prettiest drives.
In Vancouver there is a Festival or event occuring every month in the summer, from Bard on the Beach (Shakespeare festival) to the Celebration of Light, an international fireworks competition, which is set to music and takes place on the waters of English Bay . This event attracts hundreds of boats to the Bay, and the beaches and bridges around are viewing places for up to 400,000 people.
Golfers have a wide choice of courses in the area including Capilano Golf and Country Club, Furry Creek Golf and Country Club and the public Gleneagles Golf Course all within 20 minutes drive. Walkers, Hikers and Mountain Bikers all have world-class facilities nearby.
The property is not in a ski-resort but winter activities are centred around three local mountains that overlook the city - Cypress , which is one the venues for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Grouse and Seymour. Great for skiing, snow-boarding, snowshoeing and snow play with floodlighting at night. Something for everyone. Cypress Mountain is just a 25 minute drive from your holiday home, Grouse about 35 minutes and Seymour about 40 minutes.. A unique opportunity to have a winter sports holiday that can also combine city activities and sightseeing too. Vancouver itself sees very little snow but the short drive up the local mountains takes you quickly above the snowline to enjoy the pristine beauty of new snowfalls.
World famous Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are just over an hour's drive for a great day's skiing or snowboarding.
Brackendale, which attracts hundreds of bald-headed eagles in winter for salmon feeding, is about a 45 minute drive away. An incredible place for great winter bird-watching.
