The Andalucia region
The Alpujarra region is in the 'foothills' of a vast mountainous national park, the Sierra Nevada, which boasts Spain's highest peak, Mulhacen, 3477m.
This unique region has it all, and is waiting to be discovered. Although there are four seasons here, it is generally very sunny and sheltered from the worst of the weather, and well irrigated from the mountains to make it a perfect environment for growing fruit and vegetables, and for nature to thrive in abundance. To this day subsistence farming is the mainstay of the Alpujarras as there is little or no industry here. The small white villages have for centuries been built in a flat-roofed style designed to radiate heat for night time cooling.
Above (or even below) the villages you can walk all day and not see another soul except for a shepherd and his flock, but you may be lucky enough to wildlife such as eagles and wild mountain goats, or spot flora that is exclusive to these mountains. The higher you walk, the more of the Mediterranean you will see.
Come down from your walk and you can eat and drink well, particularly if you drink beer or wine, as this is one of the last regions of Spain where free tapas is served with these drinks!
The Alpujarras is the place to come if you want to immerse yourself deeply in the culture and life of rural Spain, whilst giving yourself time and space to relax, reflect and re- charge.
The magical, historic village of Válor at 915m, is secluded enough to air your soul, yet you can nip out across the road for provisions or some tapas, or easily access the nearest Market town, Ugijar, for larger shops, banks and 24 hour medical care if (hopefully not) required.
Here was the birthplace of the Moorish rebel Aben Humeya. The Moorish flat roof architectural style of house remains here, unique in Spain, and their original channelled irrigation system is still in use by local co-operatives.
Válor has always been known as one of the very loveliest villages in the Alpujarras. It is a whitewashed village with a central road running through it, linking it to other nearby villages that are also lovely to discover. Each neighbourhood or 'barrio' of the village has it's own distinct atmosphere, and it is nice to simply wander around these old winding, sometimes steep, alleyways, catching glimpses of the far reaching vistas as you explore. Local walking routes take you wandering through terraced hillside farm plots and
'barrancos', deep nature-filled gorges cut by mountain streams into the soft mica mountainsides.
During summer holidays Válor, Ugijar and Mecina Bombaron open their outdoor pools, keeping local and visiting children happy whilst their parents lounge and make the most of the cafes at poolside. There is also a local B&B who will allow you to use their lovely pool if you can reciprocate with some drinks purchases!
Helralded by deafening bangers, fun festivals abound year- round, from village fiestas to horse fairs religious celebrations, and the famous Moors and Christians re-enactment battle in Válor falls in mid September.
