The Andalucia region

Valor is situated in the lower foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in an area known as the Alpujarras. The area has routes which are ideal for walking and cycling. In the summer the mountains are great for cooling off or having a picnic under the trees. The road up to the Sierra Nevada from Valor takes you through the natural park with pretty villages on route, such as Mairena and Laroles.

The drive from Valor to Puerto La Ragua in The Sierra Nevada takes about 45 minutes. Puerto de la Ragua is a mountain pass. In the winter there is usually enough snow for winter sports . At Puerto La Ragua there is a fountain with mountain water, a tourist information centre, a cafe and place for ski-hire. There are marked routes for walkers and winter sports enthusiasts. The road to La Ragua is monitored and it is closed if the winter weather makes it too dangerous.

If you carry on the tarmac road over the mountain pass at Puerto La Ragua towards Guadix and Granada the mountain views are breathtaking. After about 15 minutes you come to La Calahora where there is a famous castle and then, when you reach the plain, there is the motorway to Granada.

The region's climate is hot dry summers and cool winters. The snow level descends to 1000 meters, just above the village.

The Alpujarras lie between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean. The area is renowned for its tranquility, the purity of its air and its skies. It has a great sunshine record and is a popular retreat for Spanish families. The Alpujarra is perfect for hill walking, painting, photography, birdwatching, astronomy .... or just relaxing!

The author Gerald Brenan, famous for the book 'South from Granada', lived in the neighbouring village of Yegen. Chris Stewart has also written books about life in the Alpujarra. Much of the Alpujarras lies within the National Park of the Sierra Nevada. There is a wealth of wildlife and more indigenous wildflowers than any other European region.
