The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Hautes-Alpes region

AlpBase is situated in Vallouise, gateway to the Ecrins National Park, in the centre of the Hautes Alpes - one of the few alpine areas that has always controlled its tourism. As well as substantially better weather – a guaranteed 300 days of sunshine every year - this area is definitely a lot less commercialised than the Northern Alps and offers an amazing choice of activities. In addition to skiing, snowboarding, hiking, climbing and mountain biking, you’ll find road biking, paragliding, canoeing, white water rafting and an abundance of wildlife.

Vallouise area

The apartment is situated in the heart of the Ecrins Massif, France’s first national park covering a huge area 30 times larger than the Chamonix Valley. In summer you have mountain biking, and walking from the doorstep. As well as fantastic rock climbing and Via Ferrata all within a 5 minute drive. In winter you can X-C ski and snowshoe from the apartment and you are only 10 minutes drive away from the award-winning family ski resort of Puy-St-Vincent and just 5 minutes drive from Pelvoux ski station. If you don’t want to drive there is a bus service that goes from the doorstep to the ski resorts of Puy-St-Vincent and Pelvoux, as well as L’Argentiere, the nearest local town. And if have children an easy 10 minutes walk will take you to a large open hillside ideal for sledging and making snowman.

Guestbook

A fine week in Les Ecrins, enjoying the fleshpots of Ailefroide and Vallouise. What a great base for an active family - easy and accessible rock routes on your doorstep, a plethora of short, long and in-between walks, plenty of wildlife, superb weather and there's even a local micro brewery - heaven!

Thank you Jerry, Jackie, Beth and Lottie for your sincere hospitality throughout this wildly wonderful time. The mountain biking, hiking and wine tasting were superb!!!
Yours was a perfect venue for becoming close to the best of what the beautiful Ecrins has to offer. Best wishes for a very happy future in a place I’ve grown so fond of in such a short time.

On the apartment - its warm, and comfortable - great if you have a baby in tow. But the best thing about the apartment is its location. It's only a 4 minute stroll to the start of a huge area of ski du fond (cross country skiing) tracks and a 13 minute drive to Puy St. Vincent, a resort with something for every level of ski and snowboard ability. La Grave (not for the faint-hearted), Serre Chevalier and Risoul are also drive-able.
On Vallouise - what a great village. Apart from being really pretty it's got everything you could possibly need - 3 bakeries within minutes from the house, restaurants, a couple of bars, a supermarket, a tabac, a great gift shop for those last minute presents, a pharmacy, a ski hire place (where husband's snow board got the best service it's ever had) and most importantly a cash point that takes Switch! What more could you want? We will definitely be back.

At it is our first time to this part of the Alps we used L'Acacia as our base for touring and seeing the local area, inc. the South of France – a three hour drive saw us in Grasse, then Cannes to Monte Carlo on the Route Napoleon. Grenoble was beautiful – Musée de Grenoble – and the Lac De Serre Ponçon huge and blue. The bright autumnal sunlight made the trees every shade of yellow, green, brown and red one can imagine – set off with snow-capped mountains and deep blue sky. Restaurants in Briançon old town recommended.

Well it’s the end of our story here at L’Acacia – you really made us feel at home for these past two weeks. What can we say – everyone needs a Jackie and Jerry when they are on holiday! Cheers for the loan of your guidebooks and maps, and your good advice. Definitely recommend the local Via Ferratas’ and the walk up the Tetes from Col De Pousterle. Loved the old town of Briançon, the lovely walk up into Narreyroux from Puy. The Glacier Blanc hike was great and saw marmots, fox, red squirrels, alpine choughs, and even a Golden Eagle! Thank you all for helping us rediscover the Alps.
