The Valletta / Central Valletta area
Valleta, capital of the Republic of Malta, is strategically situated on the Sciberras peninsula on Malta's north-east coast, surrounded by what are surely the most powerful fortifications in the world. Malta's capital Valletta is the seat of government, with parliament, the Supreme Court, government offices and other institutions. It is also the country's cultural centre with numerous operatic and dramatic performances and concerts. Valletta has an atmosphere all of it's own and the visitor will find many fine restaurants, open air cafes and good quality shopping in abundance. Valletta is a historic city and as such there are many interesting places to visit including the Royal Opera House, St Johns Cathedral, the Grand Master's Palace, Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum. A must for any visitor is a boat trip around the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour and if you time it right you may be lucky enough to enjoy one of the numerous firework displays whilst cruising the harbours.
