The Island of Malta region
The countryside in the Maltese islands is lush and green in winter and dry and barren in summer. There are modern urban areas and typical Mediterranean villages little changed over the years. With ancient Neolithic temples, grand churches and wayside chapels, and cathedrals and palaces buit by the Knights of St John. There are small islands and steep cliffs with rocky bays and sandy beaches. There are huge dockyards and small fishing villages, an Inland Sea and one of the most spectacular harbours in the world. There are typical rubble walls overrun by cacti and prickly pear, or there are the fortified walls of the bastions and the narrow steep alleys with their hanging balconies.
Malta has been involved in the film industry since the 1950's and is known within the international film industry for the diversity and versatility of its locations and its ability to double virtually anywhere. Blockbuster films such as Troy, Gladiator and Agora were all filmed in Malta as well as the epic TV series Game of Thrones and Sinbad.
World famous artists regularly appear in Malta which hosts many International events.
Malta's climate is strongly influenced by the sea, with its southerly geographical position its superb sunny weather is some of the best in the Mediterranean, with a daily average of five to six hours sunshine in mid-winter to around 12 hours in summer. Winters are mild, with only the occasional short chilly period brought about by the north and north-easterly winds from central Europe. Summers are hot, dry and very sunny. Day-time temperatures in summer are often mitigated by cooling sea breezes. Annual rainfall is low and the length of the dry season in summer is longer than in neighbouring Italy. Swimming in the sea is possible well in to the winter months, and the peak season can last until late October. Having two of the best dive sites in Europe, the islands are a popular diving destination, with crystal clear waters offering excellent visibility and the convenience of having many of the best dive sites accessible from the shore.
Access to the sea and swimming off the rocks is a 5 minute walk away from the apartment. Sandy beaches, watersports, aqua park, horseriding and golf are a short drive away.
The capital city of Valletta is inextricably linked to the history of the military and the charitable Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The fortified city is built on a rocky peninsula which separates two harbours - the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. The ancient fortifications surround a grand Baroque city, characterised by tall buildings, narrow streets with hanging balconies and many steps. With over 320 monuments -The Grandmaster's Palace built for the Knights, features an armoury and contains one of the finest collections of weapons of the period of the Knights in Europe. The magnificent St. John's Co-Cathedral with its ornate Baroque interior features Caravaggio's 'The Beheading of John The Baptist', the only signed painting. And Manoel Theatre, with its stunning interior decorated with gold leaf and one of the oldest theatres in Europe still in use. It is also a living city set to become the European Capital City of Culture 2018. The City Gate project designed by the renowned architect Renzo Piano is underway and due to be completed 2013. Planned on a grid system it is a gem of a city to explore on foot, simply watch the world go by from one of the many alfresco cafés and restaurants or dip down into the wine bars occupying the wine cellars of the old houses. There is a regular local market which sets its stalls outside the original souk which although in decline continues to survive selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish and various delicatessen produce. Valletta is also the hub for travelling anywhere on the island, from the bus station beyond the city gate. There is a regular ferry service across to Sliema and water taxis to each of the Three Cities and from Valletta waterfront there is a ferry across to Vittoriosa.
