The Island of Malta region
In today’s rushed world the pace in Malta is still comparatively leisurely. On the other hand the services are fast and efficient. The Mediterranean lifestyle means that you can take it easy in a warm, friendly and centrally situated Mediterranean island, where the sea is crystal clear and the climate mild all the year round. The Maltese are a friendly and hospitable people. Ebullient and typically Mediterranean they are always ready to give a helping hand.
The Maltese island’s mild winters are renowned, there are no sharp winds, snow, frost or endless rainy days. Instead they have a very sunny climate with a daily average of five to six hours sunshine in mid-winter to more than 12 hours in summer.
Malta enjoys a rich cultural and social life. There are theatre seasons and concerts taking place most of the year During the summer the Maltese enjoy a great outdoor life, due to the Mediterranean climate, al fresco living is the order of the day.Promenades along the seafront are a meeting place and one can either stop for a gossip or just have a brisk walk to get some exercise. It is not unusual to see Maltese neighbours congregate outside one of their homes chatting away, especially in the side streets.
If you are interested in history Malta is the place for you. The island is steeped in it. The Mnajdra Temples at Hagar Qim and Ggantija in Gozo (the oldest free-standing structures in the world, built about 3500BC, are older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge by thousands of years). These alone are World Heritage Sites.
St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina is reputedly built where Publius’s palace once stood. Mdina (the silent old city, few cars are allowed in) and Valletta, the city, are also World Heritage Cities.
Valletta area
Valletta, built by the Knights of St. John, is a truly baroque city. They arrived in Malta in 1530 and during their stay of 268 years built many splendid palaces and gardens.Auberge de Castille built by them for the Grandmaster Emanuel Pinto in 1744 now houses the office of the Prime Minister. Several other Auberges are dotted around Valletta, mainly housing government ministries.Auberge de Castille is the grandest and the most harmonious example of Maltese baroque. The Knight’s heritage include the splendid St John’s CoCathedral with Caravaggio’s "Beheading of St John" among many other treasures.
Although the small size of the island there is a wide variety of things to do. In just 48 hours and a kilometre or two , you can try a new sport, laze on a beach, or tour the most important historic sites. And if that’s not enough there is still time to enjoy the Slima shopping centre and at night the varied nightlife including the Casino.
The Islands offer a blend of local and international cultural events, entertainment, exhibitions and more. There are traditional seasonal events such as Carnival just before Easter and summer festas. The feast celebrations are truly unique in Malta. There is at least one feast a week in the summer, when the night sky is illuminated with wonderfully creative and colourful fireworks. Besides, the churches’ façades are magnificently lit up and inside, all the silver and other treasures are all brought out for the occasion. The streets are decorated with banners and lights and a band playing local and international marching music accompanies the procession of the Saint being celebrated. Besides, the nightlife in Malta rivals that of many European cities. There are annual arts and music festivals throughout the year. Whatever your taste in music, you are bound to find a venue which has classical, jazz or folk music. The performances vary from full scale bands to solo artists.
