The La Gomera region
La Gomera is arguably the most beautiful of the Canary Islands with a stunning volcanic landscape which has been compared to Hawaii. The dramatic mountainous scenery with various ravines and valleys is topped by the subtropical rainforest national park of Garajonay.
The atmosphere of La Gomera is completely different to that of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria as it has shunned mass tourism and package deal complexes in favour of smaller scale more personalized accommodation and amenities.
The Valle Gran Rey / La Calera area
Valle Gran Rey is situated on the western sunny side of the island and is the main destination for the independent traveller. There are 3 main beaches, being; Playa de Vueltas, the small harbour beach, Playa de Calera, the largest stretch of beach and the wild and rugged Playa del Ingles, a naturist beach, often unsuitable for bathing in winter due to large waves.
The "barrio" or neighbourhood of La Calera is situated a little bit further up the valley and is the oldest part of the village, the reason being that it's not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. The main trekking routes up to the mountains start literally 2 minutes away from your accommodation. Boat trips and whalewatching excursions are on offer leaving from the harbour at Vueltas. Renting a car and having a drive around the island and the national park are a must!

We found this to have been a wonderful choice of accommodation. It has been decorated and equipped to a high standard, with lots of personal touches in the decor. The apartment felt very tranquil and spaceous.
Even though our teenage son occupied the sofa bed in the main room, because the room was so big, we felt to have plenty of space.
We loved the sun roof. There is a view down to the sea to one side and spectacular massive rock faces on all other sides.
The apartment is situated in the old village of Calera, which is prettiest and quaintest part of Valle Gran Rey, with 2 or 3 quiet eating places, and the only minimarket is right opposite the apartment. But it is only 15 minutes walk down to the village of Playa, by the sea, which has a somewhat busier, more lively feel, with a few more varied restaurants, and excellent live Spanish music on the street corner at Casa Maria's every night.
Above all we like La Gomera. It is a very special island of truly stunning mountain scenery. Unusually the road tends to be at the top, with fantastic views, and with the paths going down. One day we got the 8 o'clock bus up the mountain and walked back down in about 3 hours. Other days we explored further afield in a hire car and then on foot. The roads are amazing: extremely twisty and steep and almost everywhere empty, .
I had wondered when 'Spring' comes to La Gomera. We went in April and the upper part of the island was full of wild flowers.
We highly recommend Emma's apartment and La Gomera.

This comfortable apartment is in a great (possibly the best) area of Valle Gran Rey. The steps up to it are steep, to say the least, but the climb is worth it as the front door opens onto a spacious... more

What a perfect holiday! the appartment is gorgeous, like staying in a friends house.beautifully decorated, comfortable bed, all necessary gadgets, wifi, shop seconds away.
We went on a few mega walks, getting the bus to the nearest village at the top of the hill and walking down. stunning! Glad we brought our walking boots. Next time we'll get out on a boat and go fishing. We loved our day out unsuccessfully looking for dolphins. Recommend Amazonia boat.
Valle Gran Rey is the most wonderful resort, small, quiet with a fab hippy vibe. And perfect weather. Sadly the terrible fire has caused a damage to the island and to upper valle gran rey, but it has not harmed the town at the lower ends, and the island is still our favourite place on earth for a stunning, relaxing, easy, gorgeous holdiay.
