The La Gomera region

La Gomera is arguably the most beautiful of the Canary Islands with a stunning volcanic landscape which has been compared to Hawaii. The dramatic mountainous scenery with various ravines and valleys is topped by the subtropical rainforest national park of Garajonay.
The atmosphere of La Gomera is completely different to that of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria as it has shunned mass tourism and package deal complexes in favour of smaller scale more personalized accommodation and amenities.
The Valle Gran Rey / La Calera area
Valle Gran Rey is situated on the western sunny side of the island and is the main destination for the independent traveller. There are 3 main beaches, being; Playa de Vueltas, the small harbour beach, Playa de Calera, the largest stretch of beach and the wild and rugged Playa del Ingles, a naturist beach, often unsuitable for bathing in winter due to large waves.
The "barrio" or neighbourhood of La Calera is situated a little bit further up the valley and is the oldest part of the village, the reason being that it's not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. The main trekking routes up to the mountains start literally 2 minutes away from your accommodation. Boat trips and whalewatching excursions are on offer leaving from the harbour at Vueltas. Renting a car and having a drive around the island and the national park are a must!

We can only agree with the previous 2 excellent reviews. The apartment is most tastefully furnished and amazingly well-equipped, down to finding a pencil sharpener (essential for Sudoku addicts). The... more |

Given the fact that the entire island is a bliss, our conquest for the right place to stay is an ungoing excercise. But with casa Emma with hit the jackpot. Calera is a short climb form the valley Gran Rey and just on the right side of the village. lets face it: how many retired german hippies can you handle? Esoteric massage parlors, 'artistic' galleries and cotton shirt shops come with that package but this side of Calera is just fine: a fine balance between orignal spanish neighboors and international hikers. Right across the street is the super mini mercade El Chorro that offers fresh bread every morning ( go for the kornspitze!). The appartment is spacious, with a cosy tv corner. The kitchen is fully equiped (what could we do without ikea?) and a fresly squized orange juice is just what you want evey morning. The quit bedroom is perfect for the long hours you need when you arrive from the hectic european stress. But the icing on the cake is coming home after a hike and walk onto the roof with some cheese and wine and watch the sun go down into the ocean. Cheers! Response: Thankyou for your nice review, feedback is always much appreciated, as are lovely guests like yourselves who take good care of the apartment. |

Casa Emma is just the right place to relax after a hard days hiking on the beautiful island of La Gomera or to simply chill out on the private sun terrace while psyching yourself up for the next big trek. It is a very tastefully furnished/decorated apartment and benefits from some sympathetic touches to the decor which results in one immediately feeling at home, comfortable and relaxed there. The apartment appears to be recently refurbished, has modern fixtures and fittings and is clean. It has all the amenities that one could want of an apartment and also came complete with those self catering essentials that are often sadly lacking - coffee, washing up liquid, kitchen roll, cooking oil and spices, etc. The Property Details on its Trip Advisor home page tell you all the other details you need to know. After exploring Vueltas and Playa La Calera, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Casa Emma over and above the apartment complexes there. It offers you the space, freedom and privacy that you just can't find in such complexes by plonking you slap-bang in the middle of the charming village of La Calera, away from the 'hustle and bustle' of the majority of tourists. Response: Hey, thanks for taking the time to write me a review. I'm really glad you had a great holiday & enjoyed the apartment! |
