Home description

Valle Gran Rey is actually a number of villages in one of the most impressive and beautiful ravines on the island. The valley sides are covered in agricultural terraces and pretty hamlets and palm trees scatter and zigzag around the valley as it winds its way down to the sea.

At the mouth is the port area of Vueltas, where you will find La Condesa; five minutes walk from the harbour. Here you can see an assortment of fishing and leisure boats in addition to the Garajonay ferry, which runs to Playa Santiago, San Sebastián de la Gomera and Los Cristianos in Tenerife. Playa de Vueltas is a beach next to the harbour, with black volcanic sand and a dramatic mountain backdrop.
Away from the harbour, Vueltas is a few steep, cobbled streets with an interesting variety of bars, restaurants and shops.

The main beach is La Playa, a long beach of black volcanic sand and pebbles with many bars and restaurants. Valle Gran Rey is popular for all water activities, including diving, swimming, surfing and fishing. Whale watching tours are available.

With its numerous tracks and trails the area attracts many walkers and there are a number of organizations offering guided walks.

The La Gomera region

The island of La Gomera is the second smallest and also the oldest of the 7 Canary Islands. It is barely 30 kms - a 45 minute ferry ride - away from Tenerife, but it is a different world! The island is almost circular, with the lush, laurel-forested heights of Garajonay rising to 1,487m. (5000 ft approximately) in the centre, from which deep, palm tree filled ravines (barrancos) radiate out to the coast. This laurisilver forest has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It’s a place to go to appreciate the simpler things in life and admire the beautiful rural and coastal scenery or just a place to find peace of mind and get away from the hustle and bustle. The numerous ancient paths throughout the island make it a walker’s paradise. Cars or mountain bikes can be hired to explore the land while scuba diving or a boat trip round the island will reveal it’s spectacular coastline, where steep cliffs plunging down to the sea are interspersed with pebble or exotic black sandy beaches.

It is readily accessible by ferry and has good connections to the rest of the island.
