The La Gomera region

La Gomera is the second smallest of the seven islands which form the Canarian Archipelago. It is almost circular in shape, with an area of 369 km2. It is situated next to the island of Tenerife, separated by 28km at its closest point.
Geologically speaking, it is the oldest of the seven Canary Islands. Its last volcanic eruption took place two million years ago. This has given the island certain characteristics, mainly produced by erosion. This has created spectacular ravines and impressive peaks above the surface and coastal cliffs of singular beauty. At the centre of the island you find "Alto de Garajonay" the highest point of the island, ascending to 1.487 metres. The peak is named after the national park or "Parque Nacional de Garajonay", a protected area covering 11% of the island in an exuberant green carpet.
The Valle Gran Rey area
Guadá, is in the upper part of the valley, consisting of eleven hamlets. On the left side of the valley are Lomo del Balo, los Descansaderos, La Vizcaína, Higuera del Llano, el Hornillo and Chelé. On the right, you will find El Retamal, La Rinconada, Lomo del Moral, Las Sábilas and los Granados.
The cuisine of Valle Gran Rey conserves the traditional culinary essence, based fundamentally on the produce of the land and the sea.
The ingenuity of the locals, arising from their constant struggle with the environment has given us a unique culinary legacy, among other things.

The municipal district of Valle Gran Rey is situated in the SW of the island of La Gomera. A land of extraordinary and beautiful rural landscapes, where erosion has sculpted a peculiar terrain of steep slopes and fertile valleys in a living example of how man has lived side by side with nature. The land is intensively terraced between palm groves and traditional architecture of great historic and cultural value.
Fly to Tenerife South Airport, take a taxi to the ferry port of Los Cristianos which will take approx 20mins. Take the Fred Olsen Benchi Express ferry direct to Valle Gran Rey it will take approx 2 hours. There we will meet you and see you safely into your apartment and provide a welcome briefing.

Comfortable and quiet property with outstanding views both across and down the valley. Close to amenities if needed, but at the same time out of the hubbub of beach resorts. Excellently positioned to enjoy the walking routes of the Valle Gran Rey, but also the island is small enough to easily get anywhere else you wish to walk in under an hour. We enjoy driving ourselves around, but taxis are abundant and would open up the option for linear routes. First class speedy and friendly communication from the owners. We hope to return again. |

Lovely clean comfortable flat, with everything you need. Great views from the balcony. Although a car is recommended by the owners, we managed without. Bus stop & village shop only 5mins walk. Beautiful island with fantastic walking trails We would love to stay here again. |

Very friendly family run business. A bit small for 4 adults but ideal for family use. New and well appointed. Bedroom a bit small but very comfortable double bed. About 4km from the beach and buses are few so if you don't rent a car you need to be a good walker! Excellent hiking country, walks start local to property and you can catch the 0820 bus to the National Park for much more hiking. Address is 15 Calle Rinconada, as yet there is not a plaque with Casa El Retamal. |
