Home description
With one of the best views in Ireland our comfortable cottage is ideal for families, close to sheltered and unspoilt Glanleam beach. Valentia is connected to the mainland of County Kerry by a bridge and a ferry service. The cottage which is over 200 years old is privately owned and is one of a pair that were originally part of the Knight of Kerry's Glanleam Estate. The cottage has been owned by the same family for several generations and has been sympathetically modernised.
Valentia Island is linked to the mainland by the bridge at Potmagee and by a small roll-on roll-off ferry that runs continuously during high season and links Knightstown on Valentia to Cahirciveen.
The island lies within the gulf stream and consequently the climate is mild throughout the year, many sub tropical plants can be found on the island. The sub tropical gardens at Glanleam house are open to visitors during the summer.

The County Kerry region
County Kerry has been described as a striking panorama of deep blue lakes, wild mountainous landscapes, rugged coastline and sub-tropical flora. It is often referred to as the Kingdom, as it is believed to be the closest thing to heaven on earth.
The Ring of Kerry is part of the mystical & unspoilt region of Ireland that has attracted visitors for hundreds of years. Its spectacular beauty is beyond question and it is a natural centre for outdoor pursuits including golf, water sports, cycling, walking, riding and the very best fishing for salmon & trout. The Ring of Kerry has some of the finest beaches in Europe that provide all the facilities for a traditional seaside holiday. Above all the Ring of Kerry provides an amazing insight into the ancient heritage of Ireland - see the Iron Age Forts & Ogham Stones, Old Monasteries and a landscape carved out of rock by the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Visitors to Ireland should not miss a trip to the beautiful Ring of Kerry
Valentia Island / Gort Gower area
Situated in the beautiful south west corner of County Kerry, Valentia Island has been a popular location for holidaymakers for many years. The island lies within the gulf stream and consequently the climate is mild throughout the year. Valentia is linked to the mainland by the bridge at Portmagee and by a small roll-on roll-off ferry that runs continuously during high season and links Knightstown on Valentia to Cahirciveen. Valentia is a great place to walk, cycle and take in the stunning scenery. At Valentia museum just outside Knightstown you can discover the history of the isalnd including the transatlantic cable station, the world famous slate quarry and the recently discovered Tetrapod Trackway or dinosaur footprints!
It is also in a great location on the Ring of Kerry to explore picturesque towns and villages and beautiful beaches such as Ballinskelligs and Derrynane. There are day trips available by boat from April to late September to the famous Skellig rocks - Skellig Michael was home to some of the earliest monastic settlements in Ireland and Small Skelling is a sanctuary to fantastic numbers of birdlife - the puffin is closely associated with the rocks and the Skelligs Experience heritage centre on Valentia (open April to November) brings the sights and sounds of Skelligs to life.
There are many excellent restaurants and bars on Valentia, Cahirciveen and Portmagee - seafood and fish are a speciality in many of them.
How to get there
There are regular flights from London Stansted and London Luton to Kerry County airport also known as Farranfore or Killarney airport. Car hire available at the airport. The drive to Valentia will take you approximately 1½ hours. There are also a number of operators flying to Cork airport with a connecting drive of approximately 3 hours. Flights can be booked with Ryan Air via their website www.ryanair.com.
Another popular option is to travel by sea by either Stena Line (+44 (0)990 747474) which sails in approximately 3 hours from Fishguard in Wales to Rosslare in County Wexford or Irish Ferries which sails from Pembroke to Rosslare (bookings & information 00353 818 300 400 or email info@irishferries.com). This is an excellent choice if you would like to take in the stunning scenery on the drive through to Kerry.

Guestbook for Gort Gower
I've been meaning to Email you to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the cottage on Valentia, the Island is very much as we remembered it, but no donkey carts! We had wonderful weather and everyone was so friendly, especially Eileen ONeil. Have promised ourselves a return visit sometime. Best Wishes Deirdre (Heather).
Just a note to let you know how happy we were with our stay at the cottage. The weather in July was fantastic and we spent many happy hours at Glanleam beach. Thanks again Anita and Andrew
