The County Kerry region

Valentia Island (Dairbhre in Irish- Place of Oaks), is one of Europe's western most inhabited locations, lying off the Iveragh Peninsula just off the main Ring of Kerry in the Republic of Ireland.

It is linked to the mainland by a bridge at Portmagee, as well as by a ferry (seasonal) which sails from Reenard Point to Knightstown , it's capital town, the island's main settlement.

The permanent population of the island is 650, and the island is approximately 11 km long by 3 km wide.

Situated on the main Gulf stream the Island boasts an array of magnificient tropical plants and shrubs with colourful fuchsia in abundence.

Curreill House is situated in what can only be described as one of the most sceneic locations in the south west of Kerry!!!

Valentia Island / Tennies area

Walking anywhere in Valentia is an experience in itself. For the fishing enthusiast, whether deep sea angling or shore fishing is your passion, Valentia is an ideal base. You can hire a boat from Knightstown pier and go deep sea angling.

For a more prersonal service, and to cater for your individual needs, then the owner Noel has a sea going cabin cruiser (see photograph over) fully equipped with toilet, fishing rods and electronic fish finder. You may prefer to sit back relax or sun bathe whilst your skipper Noel takes you on a guided tour of the Valentia waters and beyond. What better way to arrive in Dingle for alight lunch, the obligatory Guiness and shopping for the ladies before the return voyage, to Curreill House, to experience the unforgetable sun sets!!!

There are some great places to eat both in Valentia and it's surrounding areas offering varied types of cuisine. The Island offers a wealth of activities and you might consider:-

Hill walking
Photography
Golf (Links nearby include Waterville & Killorglin)
Horse riding
Cycling
Canoeing
Deep-sea angling
Fishing
World renowned Diving Centre

Skelligs Rocks (Located approx 7 miles out to sea)
No trip to Valentia would be complete without a boat trip to the Skelligs as it is highly recommended. This is an excellent location to have a picnic so ensure you pack some lunch! The views are breath taking looking back towards Valentia Island and Portmagee or out across the Atlantic Ocean for as far as the eye can see, next stop America! From here you can view the original ‘bee hive’ houses where the Monks once lived. You can admire the beautiful wild birds, including Puffins, and it is not uncommon to see dolphins in these waters.

Tetra Pod Fossil Prints - Valentia Island
385 million years old Tetrapod fossil footsteps have recently been discovered on Valentia Island, near Cahersiveen. This is a major discovery since only a few similar examples exist throughout the world. It has attracted interest from palaeontologists world-wide and was featured in “National Geographic” magazine

Trans Atlantic Cable to Newfoundland USA – Valentia
Laid in 1865 the Trans Atlantic Cable linking Valentia to Newfoundland, was at the time the only telegraphic link between Europe and the United States. It dealt with up to 4000 messages a day between the two continents, was manned 24 hours a day 365 days a week and provided employment for up to 242 staff.

Glanleam Sub Tropical Gardens – Valentia Island
Relax in hidden valleys, admire the beautiful exotic plants and the magnificent views while wandering through the wonderful Subtropical Gardens at Glanleam House. Once the seat of the Knights of Kerry, the gardens are now open to the public from 11am to 5pm. Delicious meals, snacks and fresh pastries are also served in the newly re-opened tea room.

Altazamuth Stone - Valentia Island
The script on the original stone reads 'Great European arc of longitude, site of the position of the Altazamuth Stone used to determine the longitude of Valentia in 1862'

Cliffs Of Fogher
This was once a working sheep farm but the present owners have invested time and money to make this one of the most spectacular walks on the Island. It is possible to drive to the top of the mountain although 1st gear is recommended!! Alternatively a car park is situated half way up the mountain and allows taking in the viewing platform observing the Cliffs of Fogher and the Dingle peninsular beyond. From here you can complete the ascent to the top of the mountain on foot. No trip to Valentia would be complete without doing this walk. A small fee is incurred to cover maintenance and car parking costs.

Valentia Annual Regatta
The sport of Coastal Rowing can be traced as far back as the old cobblers and fishermen of the mid-Nineteenth Century. Various boats and crews of cobblers are recorded as racing out to meet the incoming schooners, etc. with the winners receiving the valuable piloting contract. There was also the benefit of racing to the best fishing grounds. This was a means of survival and of earning a living, but in their spare time and during holidays these coastal crews raced for sport. This sport has carried on to this day and Valentia boasts first class rowing teams. Each year a regatta is staged, on the Island, and is an excellent family day out.

Valentia Island GAA Football Team & O'CONNELL Stadium
Mick O'Connell was a very successful Gaelic footballer from County Kerry in Ireland .Mick O'Connell was born on Valentia island just off the coast of County Kerry in 1937. He was famed for rowing across from Valentia to the mainland for training and matches. Regarded as one of the game’s most accomplished and stylish players he played in nine all Ireland football finals for Kerry. He played club football with Valentia Young Islanders and still resides on the Island. The Young Islanders are to this day a formidable team and their football pitch is located in Chapletown. This is another great afternoon out for all the family for a small admission fee.
