The County Kerry region
The Cork Kerry Region is steeped in ancient history and folklore. There are many heritage and cultural sites of significance themes of which include emigration from Ireland in the 19th century, the story of Irish whiskey, transport, the life of early Christian monks and traditional farming methods. There are also many sites of archaeological and historical importance.
County Kerry is traditionally known as the 'kingdom' and has a mountainous south with the Beara, Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas and plain-like north. An area of outstanding natural beauty, the coastline alternates sandy bays with rocky headlands.
Much of this beauty can be discovered en route around the Ring of Kerry. The drive from Tralee to Brandon is spectacular. Climb Mount Brandon or view impressions of the surrounds in the Brandon Art Gallery where the beauty of Kerry's scenery is captured in a collection of stunning oil paintings. A walk over the Conor Pass will take you from Brandon to Dingle. However, scenery is by no means Kerry's only attraction; there are many coastal resorts with excellent angling, great cycling, superb golf courses and a wealth of ancient monuments.
Valentia Island / Tennies area
Valentia Island is the perfect, remote location for walking, fishing and diving. For walkers there are many choices including Bray Head, The Grotto, the Lighthouse and Culloo.
Fishermen have the option of deep sea angling or shore fishing. Boats can be hired from Knoghtstown pier. Divers should contact Valentia Sea Sports.
Portmagee is the main departure point for the Skellig Rocks. Skellig Michael, the larger of the two islands is the site of the world’s finest example of an early Christian monastic settlement. The monastic complex lies 12km off the south west of Ireland on a rocky pinnacle and dates to the 6th or 7th century. The monastery survived for about six centuries before being abandoned in the 13th century. The monastic enclosure consists of six beehive-shaped huts of mortarless stone construction, two oratories and a church.
