About the home

Whether you just want to relax and enjoy this cosy country cottage, the garden, the swimming pool, the great view of the Miño Valley and/or explore the interesting surrounding towns, forts and nature. This property is a great base from which to explore northern Portugal and Spain.

The property is situated on a hillside, in a small village which contains two local bars (30m and 90m), restaurants (200m), church (50m) and necessity shopping (30m).

The nearest town is Valenca (5km) where the bridge to the Spanish town of Tuy is situated. Both towns have an abundance of shops supermarkets and restaurants. Valenca has a fortified walled city section and Tuy a castle. The beaches of the Costa Verde (Green Coast) start off in Caminha (15km ) at the estuary of the Miño river. There are a great many interesting places to visit.

Some examples are Porto (100km) itself with its traditionally British run Port wine businesses, Santiago (120km) the famous cathedral and Pilgrimage site, Monte Tecla (40km) one of the best preserved examples of a neolithic village, the historical town of Braga (50km) and the Geres Nature Reserve (20km).

PLEASE NOTE that for safety reasons, the property is best suited to accommodate small children that can already swim. The pool is relatively shallow at the house end (1.5 metres) but is 3 metres deep at the opposite end so we recommend that you give this matter careful consideration before booking. If you should have any doubts we will be more than happy to discuss any safety issues with you.

The Costa Verde region

The Miño River Valley (or Ostium Minii as the Romans called it) represents the northernmost border of Portugal and Spain. As such it features fortified towns full of history, vineyards with their own appellations, unique gastronomy and ancient hill forts.

The weather is mild in this northern section of the Iberian Peninsula thanks to the Gulf Stream currents that pass nearby. The area is rather wet and humid in winter but the weather improves considerably from April to October. Temperatures in this warmer part of the year can range from 12 degrees centigrade and 38 with July and August offering the highest.

The Valenca area

The house itself is ideal for relaxation. The views from the garden are an ideal backdrop for reading, enjoying the swimming pool and taking in the sun.

The nearby town of Valenca (4km away) contains a well preserved fortress which features excellent shopping opportunities within the fortified walls. There is also an open air market which takes place on Wednesday. Just across the old iron bridge from Valenca is the Spanish border town of Tuy with its beautiful Cathedral.

The nearest beach is just 12 km away in Caminha and runs south through VIana do Castelo almost to Porto where the established Port Merchants can be visited such as Sandeman, Croft, Cockburns etc.

There are many other attractions such as the ancient cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, the Port of Bayona from which one of Christopher Columbus`s ships departed in the late 1400's (see the replica on display) and Gires the famous nearby nature reserve.

The closest airports are Porto, Portugal and Vigo, Spain.

Vigo is the nearest (45km/30 mls) but Oporto (Porto) has the best direct flight connections with regular services of the low cost airlines Ryanair etc.

At either one of these airports a car can be hired and the journey to the Villa is very straight forward. It will take about 30 minutes from Vigo and 60 from Porto.

We can also arrange a Transfer from the Airport to Villa and back on the return leg for a small additional charge of 50 pounds or 70 Euros.

Thank you for your warm welcome. This is undoubedly one of our best holiday venues, both in terms of the area and the fantastic accomodation.
