The Algarve / Central Algarve region
The Algarve is located in southern county of Portugal and is geographically the most South Westerly tip of Europe. It boasts over 100 sunny beachs from the Reserva Natural da Ria Formosa Reserve which runs along the Eastern coast to the virtually uninhabited windswept beachs of the Parque Natural da Costa Vicentina on the Western coast. The Algarve is bordered by Spain and it is only a short drive to the cultural and ancient city of Seville in Spain and Portugal's capital, Lisbon.
The Algarve is a relatively small area and has well maintained and easily accessible road system which makes touring and sightseeing very attractive and there are many fine places to visit, such as the 12th century Moorish Castle at Silves, the fortress and training school of Prince Henry the Navigator, and the lighthouse at Cape St Vincent which in olden times, before the discovery of the Americas, was thought of as the end of the world. There are also many cathedrals, churches, museums and stately houses of architectural interest.
In the 17th and 18th century Portugal was a leader in the discoveries of the New World, the Africas and Eastern trade. In recent years this little country has joined the European Union, has a very stable government and enjoys the comforts of modern Europe.
The Algarve is a very popular destination, the consistent good weather and top class golf courses being the main attractions. The region, from the Spanish border town of Villa Real de São Antonio to Cape St Vincent, is about a hundred miles and the depth of the county is less than five miles. The west has a backdrop of the Monchique Mountains with spectacular scenery, spa towns, monasteries, lush vegetation and protects the Algarve from rain. Hence the glorious climate all year round.
Food and wine are institutions here, as is spotless accommodation, courtesy to visitors, genuine friendliness and a pride in service. Most people are conversant in English. There is also an overwhelming respect for the law, which makes the Algarve a particularly safe and relaxing vacation destination.
The old and the new is very apparent here with modern hotels and resorts lying side by side with old farms where you can admire the fig, almond, olive and orange groves. Seafood is abundant and varied and there are many unusual dishes to try. Another aspect of the Algarve are the wide variety of beaches, all graced with thick grained golden sand and all very clean with nice beach restaurants.
The Eastern Algarve – the Sotaventa (leeward) coast, is the lesser known half of the region the pace of life is slower and has with a very different topography and character to the central and western Algarve the beaches are typically long, wide and flat. The west is typically with its coves and rock formations or longer beaches with a background of red cliffs and pine trees
Over the past 30 years, the Algarve has emerged as Europe's top golf destination, the 5-star golf resorts of Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura being famous throughout the golfing world.
Vale do Lobo / Quinta do Lago area
In the villa is a well stocked folder with all the details of the attractions so you can read at leisure and book you choices. Before departure for your holiday we provide an e-book with lots of information about the Algarve and Golden Triangle so you start planning your holiday.
The local area has a huge variety of activities to interest the whole family. Options include horse riding, fishing, yachting/sailing, champagne cruises, shark & dolphin watching, 4x4 safari tours & Cultural visits.
In Almancil there is a karting track if you need to burn off that adrenalin..... There is also an Aqua Park (10 mins drive on the other side of Quateria) and a Swim With Dolphin experience and Theme Park (30 mins drive on the Motorway).
Faro town is a 15 minute drive there is a large shopping centre the Forum that offers good facilties for supermarket and retail shopping. Faro Old Town has an interesting history and several historic landmarks worth investigating. There is a lovely harbour with restaurants dotted about. In Almancil (5 min drive) is a beautiful church with wonderful mosiacs that is open to the public. Quarteria & Loule both boast excellent markets that sells both fresh produce and local made prodcuts.
From Varandas Do Lago about 3/4 mile down the main road towards Vale Do Lobo are another good selection of restaurants including the Sao Gabriel - a Michelin star restaurant and the Thai Garden restaurant also highly recommended. I also recommend the several 'beach shack' restaurants collectively known as 'Julias' it is a 3 minute drive from the villa located on the Ancao beach where celebrity spotting is a favourite pastime.
The Quinta do Lago Shopping Centre is about a mile down the road, here there are many exclusive designers shops and some lovely restaurants/cafes. There is also a Italian restaurant that delivers pizza and pasta (and a bottle of wine) to the villa....the menu is in the folder...for those nights that you just can't be bothered to cook.
Golfing weekends can be arranged. Golf Guests can take advantage cheaper golf rates. The courses with discounted rates are: Vale do Lobo Royal, Vale do Lobo Ocean, Quinta da Lago Norte, Quinta do Lago Sul, Vila Sol, Vilamoura Old Course, Vilamoura Millennium, Vilamoura Pinhal, Vilamoura Laguna, Salgados, Benamor, Qinta Da Ria, Quinta de Cima. The information and rates are available please email the owner for details, costs and distance details.
There are plenty of opportunities to play tennis nearby in Vale Do Lobo. I can arrange court times in the Tennis Valley (14 flood lit courts) of VdL. There are professionals on hand to help you improve any aspect of your game, regular lessons can be arranged for you.
A stroll along the beach will take you to Quinta Do Lago or Vale Do Lobo both offering an excellent selection of restaurants and bars to enjoy a few cocktails in ! A morning or afternoon spend wandering the Ria Formosa is a relaxing experience - the area is heritage protected and boasts a number of rare birds, so don't forget your binoculars.
It is advisable to have a car while on holidays - it makes it easier to go exploring or bring back your finds from the local markets. We can arrange you car hire for you - prices are from E90 low season, E125 mid season, E160 high season. The car can be arranged for collection from Faro Airport or can be delivered to the villa for you.
There are a number of reliable taxi companies that operate in the area, if you wish to go out for the evening and fancy a few drinks, you will be able to. Vilamoura is about 10 minutes drive away and has a very upbeat nightlife with a good selection of 'sports' bars and nightclubs - and the Casino for those who think that lady luck is on their side.
We also have available a personal airport 'meet and greet' & return drop off service with private transfer to the villa, the transfer cost includes baggage assistance, car seats for children and orientation tour of the villa. This a local payable cost of E40 one way E70 return for upto 4 passengers.
How to get there
BA, Easyjet, Monarch, Globespan, Thomson, BMI all run a good schedule of flights from the UK to Faro. Aer Lingus & Ryanair fly from Ireland. TAP Portugal have flights from most European cities and Transavia covers the Northern Europe routes.
Alternatively you can fly into Lisbon or Seville - it is less than a 2 hour drive on excellent EU funded motorways - and you can do a bit of sightseeing on route. If you are interested in this option I can help you with advice and directions.
I recommend the websites www.skyscanner.net or www.kayak.com to see the best price for your flights, it is a very easy and compact site that loads up all airlines departing from your airport of choice with the times and most importantly the cost, so you compare the airlines at a glance.
I can arrange car hire for you at very competive rates - please email for the current costs for car rental.
I can also arrange a meet and greet service or private car airport drop off from Faro airport for a small locally paid cost.
A fun web site to use is www.wunderground.com it is a 'weather site' that has historical weather data for Faro and also a 'trip planner' option that gives you a really good idea of what type of weather to expect when you are on holiday.
