Home description

Casa Helandria is situated in the centre of the so called ''Golden Triangle" between Val do Lobo, Quinta da Lago and Almancil. It is about 3Km inland from the coast in a quiet location with just a few villas nearby. On one side is a field with a few pine and fig trees where we sometimes see the local shepherd grazing his flock. The villa has a 10 x 5 metre swimming pool, 3 twin bedded rooms (one with en suite bathroom) second bathroom, kitchen, dining area and an upstairs lounge with balcony.

The garden is full of pines, fruit trees and various other indigenious plants with plenty of shady areas for those who want to stay out of the hot sun. For sunworshippers, there is a large patio area surrounding the pool with 6 sunloungers.

The villa is only 20 minutes drive from Faro airport and is far enough inland that we are not on the flightpath, unlike many villas on the big developments nearby.

Both Quinta da Lago and Val do Lobo are within 2Km of the villa and the nearest shopping centre is only 1Km away. Within a 10 minute drive there are over 50 restaurants.

The Algarve / Central Algarve region

The Algarve has so much to offer. The sea is warm, the climate is wonderful and the Algarve’s beaches meanwhile are among the best in the world. There is so much variety to chose from - hidden beaches, family beaches, beaches where the sea is calm and beaches that are ideal for water sports. Whichever one you go for, there is always fun in abundance.

Yet if you go inland you step back in time. Wonderful old buildings and a very quiet pace of life. This is a rural economy based around small farms, producing cork, olives and fruit.


Vale do Lobo / Quinta do Lago area

The beach of Ancão, in front of Quinta do Lago, is miles long and it is never crowded here, even in the height of summer. This area is just 5km from our villa. Nearby is the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, with a vast abundence of wildlife. Far from the madding crowd, this is a different way to enjoy the beach.

The Algarve has become synonymous with golf and there are now nearly 30 courses within an hours drive of Casa Helandria. Many more are in the planning stage. The courses at Val do Lobo (Royal and Ocean), Quinta da Lago (South and North), Pinheiros Altos and San Lorenzo are all within a 5 minute drive. The 5 courses at Vilamoura (Old, Pinhal, Laguna, Millenium and Victoria) are twenty minutes drive as is the Vila Sol course.

Tennis and Riding is also available within a 5 minute drive.


How to get there

Faro airport is only 20 minutes drive away and there are now a wide variety of airlines flying to Faro from the UK including: Avro, Bmibaby, British Airways, Easyjet, Excel, First Choice,
Flybe, Monarch, TAP, Thomson

Ryanair have flights from Ireland

A hire car will be required. There are a wide variety of different companies. We use the Kelkoo web site to find the best deals each time we visit.

An alternative route we have used sometimes is to fly into Lisbon. This is around a 3 hour drive along a motorway toll road. However it is a good route for anyone that would like to spend part of their holiday elsewhere in Portugal rather than just the Algarve.

There are three twin bedded rooms all with large built in wardrobes containing drawers and plenty of coat hangers. All of the bedrooms are designed for flexibility so that the beds can be pushed together to form a double bed easily. Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor overlooking the swimming pool. They share a bathroom with a bath and shower attachment as well as a large wash basin set in a marble surround. Next door is a separate WC. The master bedroom is upstairs with a large en-suite bathroom. The bathroom has a bath,with shower attachment, a WC and two wash basins within a large marble surround.

The kitchen has a dual fuel cooker (electricity and gas), large fridge with freezer, a microwave and a washing machine. (At the side of the house there is a rotary washing line.) There is a kettle, toaster and electric juicer and a variety of cookery books. The villa is very well appointed with plenty of cooking utensils, cutlery, crockery and glasses. There is a dining area alongside the kitchen with a large patio door leading to an outside dining area. This is an ideal spot for breakfast in the early morning sun.

The main lounge is situated upstairs. It is equipped with two 3 person settees and a couple of coffee tables. There is a large log burning fireplace which we use on chilly evenings in winter. We have a library of about 100 books for our guests to use as well as a variety of games. Because we value the quiet peaceful nature of the surroundings we do not have any audio visual equipment, but of course guests are free to bring their own Ipods, MP3 players etc. Leading off the lounge is a balcony, which is a delightful spot to enjoy a gin and tonic in the evening, whilst watching the sun set.

For guests who visit early or late in the season, the evenings can get chilly so we have a number of portable electric radiators. We also have an iron and ironing board.

Further details outdoors:
Casa Helandria is set in over 1000 square metres of garden, which has been designed in the Portuguese style. There are pine trees, orange, lemon and fig trees, which guests can pick during the season. There are also oleanders, bougainvillea and mimosa in the garden. In one corner there is a large rockery with a variety of succulents.

At the back of the villa, facing south, is a large patio area surrounding a 10 x 5 metre swimming pool. The tiled pool is about 90 cm deep at the shallow end and 1.80 m at the deep end. During the season it is cleaned regularly and is filtered via a recirculating pump.

Both the pool and patio receive direct sun for most of the day, except during the winter period. There are 6 sun loungers with cushions as well as a sunshade. For those guests who prefer shade there is a pergola surrounding a tiled table. This makes an ideal spot to enjoy lunch under the shady canopy.

Built into the patio wall is a large BBQ suitable for cooking for at least 6 people. Outside lighting enables guests to enjoy al fresco dining on the many warm balmy evenings that occur on the Algarve.

Unlike many villas we offer our guests flexible booking arrangements priced on a per day basis. However the minimum booking period is 3 nights and we do not allow changeovers on Sundays as our maid does not work on that day. However during the height of the season (July and August) guests may be required to book on specific dates. The villa is only available from 4 pm on the date of arrival and we request that guests vacate the villa by 10 am on their date of departure, in order to allow Virgilia to prepare for the next guests.
