The Rhone / French Alps / Savoie region
Val d'Isere is located at 1,850m in the French Alps, within the Savoie department of the Rhone-Alpes region of France and is one of the premier ski resorts in Europe.
The Rhone-Alps is one of the 26 regions of France, located on the eastern border of the country, towards the south. The region was named after the Rhône River and the Alps mountain range. Its capital, Lyon, is the second-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris.
Savoie is famous for its cows, which produce numerous cheeses, including Beaufort, Savoie Gruyère, Reblochon, Tamié, Tome des Bauges and Tomme de Savoie. Numerous wines are also grown in Savoie, the most famous being made from Gamay, Pinot Noir and Mondeuse grapes.
Val d'Isere / Laisinant area
Val d'Isere is a beautiful location during the summer with lush green meadows and clear blue skies. There are plenty of activities to take part in, including peaceful mountain walks, mountain biking, climbing, swimming, golf, tennis, archery, paragliding, 4 x 4 driving, quad biking and even some summer skiing on the glaciers that remain snow-covered year round.
Many of the lifts remain open so you can access some of the highest peaks in Europe and enjoy the stunning, peaceful scenery of the French Alps at whatever pace suits you.
Probably the most famous ski resort in the world, Val d’Isère has one of the best snow records in Europe. It links with Tignes to form ‘L’Espace Killy’ which is 10 miles from end to end, and self-titled "Most Beautiful Ski Area in the World." Beauty aside, the combined space is one of the largest ski areas in the world. . The quality and the quantity of the snow make it a skier’s mecca and many people won’t even consider skiing anywhere else.
Val-d'Isère is most recognisable by its charming "chalet" architecture and has developed substantially but tastefully over the years with all new buildings being finished in wood and local stone. The village has gradually become a town with excellent facilities for skier and non-skier alike. There are plenty of shops selling the very latest in ski gear and gadgets. Non-skiing guests or those taking a break from the slopes can browse the extensive range of exclusive shops, or enjoy a wide range of alternative relaxing activities.
Val d'Isere has a bustling and lively atmosphere centred on the wide main street that runs the length of the town. It has a weekly market selling mainly clothes, local cheeses and saucissons.
There are numerous restaurants and bars for a quiet drink or energetic bars for après ski with live music, and two night clubs for those with the stamina. It also has the usual leisure facilities including spas, swimming pool, an open air ice rink and a cinema showing some of the latest films.
Val d'Isere will be hosting the World Skiing Championships in February 2009 so book early for your place!
