The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region

The whole Vaucluse area is worth exploring for its natural beauty and history. Visit the 'perched' villages, historic towns and bustling Provencal markets. Vaison is at the foot of Mont Ventoux: snow covered with skiing in winter and superb views in summer, not to mention a cyclist's and walker's paradise.
The towns of Orange, Avignon, Carpentras and Grenoble are all easily reached by car. Marseille and the south coast - approximately 1 hours drive on the autoroute.
Vaison is on the "Routes de Vins" and is surrounded by vineyards and 'caves' where you can sample wonderful full-bodied reds and buy at wholesale prices. Try the town's own wines and you won't be disappointed.
The Ardeche Gorge - approximately 1 hour away and great for swimming and canoeing or just enjoying the stunning scenery.
The Vaison-la-Romaine area
Vaison is an ancient and historical town, Vaison boasts something for everyone. Situated at the foot of Mont Ventoux and about 40 minutes north of Avignon, the town has been of strategic importance since Celtic times when a fortress was built on the hill to the west of the river. The town really grew in prominence with the Roman conquest and an impressive town was built on the east bank. Many of the roman ruins have been excavated and can be visited today in the centre of Vaison. In the 12th century, a castle was built on the site of the Celtic fortress and the "haute ville" grew up around the castle. You can still wander the cobbled streets and alleyways and visit the ruined castle and take in the fantastic views of Mont Ventoux, the lavender fields and vineyards so typical of this area. The River Ouveze runs through the town and is crossed by the gallo-roman bridge separating the modern from the ancient parts of the town. The roman past of Vaison is celebrated by open-air performances at the town's amphitheatre. Visit the Tuesday morning market which spills out of the main square into the surrounding streets for local specialities.

Lovely place to stay, great location and we are planning to go back. The house is very clean and very well maintained with a private patio area to the front of the house with a table and chairs. We ate out there most lunch times and there is a shaded area which is handy in the midday sun. The living area and bedrooms are a good size and very comfortable and the bathroom has a bath with shower. The kitchen has a washing machine which is good if travelling with small children. There is lots of information in the house on places to go and see which we found very handy as it was our first time here. The internet access was also helpful. The house is an a mews type complex which is nice and quiet with a lovely pool. We went in June and most days we were the only people round it, which was nice as it felt like it was our private pool. The pool is very clean too. The town is stunning and is a short walk away, however as I was pregnant at the time we drove and there is ample free parking so we never struggled to park. We ate out most nights round the town square in some lovely restaurants and while we were there there was a Mussels Festival on. I was unable to eat them due to my pregnancy, but my husband enjoyed them. I hope to have them next time. There are plenty of shops in the town and a very good supermarket that we used on a regular basis and the market there is fab with lots of food stalls amongst clothes, local goods stalls etc. The pizza stall was a big hit. We would recommend walking up to the old part of the town, which has great views and is so pretty especially early evening. We would say that this has to be one of our favourite holidays, great location and amenities, lovely house, and stunning town with great food |

We have booked twice with this owner and both times we were delighted with the house, everything you would need for a self catering holiday is in the house, beautiful and clean - I called it a 'home from home'. A plus is the swimming pool on site. Gated area, safe and secure especially for children. The area around Vaison is wonderful, visit when the Lavender fields are in bloom. The old town is a must to visit especially Tuesday. market day. A great position to visit the many towns and villages around. The owners are very helpful in advising on the area and I have no hesitation in recommending this property. |

Le Lavendou is the only holiday we've ever returned to - this year (2012) will be our 3rd visit in 4 years which says it all. Within walking distance to the vibrant and historic town of Vaison, world renowned wine producers within a twenty mile radius and so many interesting places to visit. The accommodation is simple and clean and works brilliantly - yes it's paradise. |
