Our villa with private exclusive pool, is situated in St Marcellin lès Vaison, a little village in the Ouvèze valley, just 2 kilometres from our local historic market town of Vaison la Romaine. In summer we watch the sun setting over the medieval castle in Vaison from the verandah.

The villa overlooks vineyards which run down to the river. Across the valley are the distinctive hills of Les Dentelles de Montmirail, featuring the hillside medieval village of Crestet.

The house, pool and garden are on the edge of the village but are not themselves overlooked. It's a wonderful spot to relax, and a great base for family excursions.

The owner is not on site - local representatives are on hand; there is a changeover fee of E105 on arrival.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region

The department of Vaucluse in Provence shows this sun-blessed country at its best, with wonderful variety of activities for the holiday maker.

The historic and beautiful cities of Avignon and Orange are within 45 minutes drive, with Aix-en-Provence , Montpellier , the Camargue and the coast a little further afield but within very easy reach for spending a day on the beaches of the Mediterranean . All can be reached within about 1.5 hours.

Also within an hour are the foothills of the Alps and the gorges of the Ardèche with great canoeing and rafting.

The area is steeped in Roman history, most famously, the magnificent and breathtaking Pont du Gard and the Theatre at Orange , both less than I hour drive away.

Vaison-la-Romaine

Vaison la Romaine itself has a charming mix of history, with both extensive excavated Roman remnants and a very attractive medieval upper town of largely unspoilt passageways; together with a vibrant present centre of squares and cafès including a market which every week brings the best of Provencal food and craft to view.

Vines dominate the hillsides and valley floors, and the many various local caves display the harvest in distinctive style in local villages, some of which are world famous, and some of which are simply great value; excellent reds and rôses of the Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Ventoux, also to be sampled at the frequent local fetes held through the summer. Other locally produced wonders of the soil include fields of lavender and many different fruit orchards including olives, cherries and apricots which all combine to give a rich pattern of colour to the landscape through the seasons.

The iconic Mont Ventoux is just a few kilometres further down our valley, magnificent for walkers and motorists, but an especial target for cyclists who have seen their heroes conquer it in the Tour de France in which it often features.
