The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Discover the delights of the Turquoise Coast and the wooded hills of Lycia surrounding Uzumlu.. The Turquoise Coast (Turkey's most beautiful region).
The coastal resort town of Fethiye and the rugged coves and sandy beaches of the Turquoise Coast (Patara and Olu Deniz are the most famous) are just 30-40 mins away from this picturesque and secluded spot. And if you want to sample some of the best of Turkish food, there are a number of excellent restaurants close by.
On the western edge of the famous Turquoise Coast of Turkey and the beautifully wooded Taurus mountains of Lycia rising to 10,000 feet, Uzumlu is ideally situated for outdoor activity holidays of all kinds. As well as some of the best walking in Turkey, there are plenty of other things to do, such as sailing, diving, riding, river rafting and sea-kayaking, as well as one of the best spots in Europe for paragliding.
The famous Saklikent Gorge and the renowned Lycian Way & St. Peter's Trail are close by. Both Saklikent and the Lycian Way can be reached in a short drive from Uzumlu. Saklikent is particularly impressive as the largest river gorge in Turkey, and can be walked for several kilometers.
And for those who want to head inland from the Turquoise Coast to explore the interior of ancient Lycia, many classical sites from Greek and Roman times can be found right on your doorstep, including Xanthos, Patara, Tlos and Cadianda. Patara is especially interesting. Not only has much of the site of the ancient city of Patara been recently excavated, but Patara beach itself is one of the longest - and most undeveloped - white sand beaches on the whole Turquoise Coast of Turkey. Patara beach and the surrounding area is protected as one of the last remaining nesting sites for the loggerhead turtle in Turkey.
Or if you prefer, you could just laze beside the pool at our peacefull location in Uzumlu with a cool drink in your hand to enjoy the sunshine and the fabulous views across the wooded valley slopes . . .
About 25 minutes by car or dolmus (the local minibus service) from Uzumlu, Fethiye is a charming town set in a wide but sheltered bay. The bay is dotted with many small islands, and surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of mountains. Built on the ancient site of Telmessos, you will see the remains of Lycian rock tombs scattered around the city. The Roman theater is also the venue for outdoor concerts in the summer.
Don't miss the large weekly market on Tuesday, or the fish market, where you buy your fish from a central stall and take it to one of the restaurants nearby to be cooked and served for a small charge. There is also a fruit and vegetable market where you can buy fresh local produce
The beach at Patara, 50 mins drive from Uzumlu, is justly famous. Although not quite so spectacular as Olu Deniz, it has a number of attractions which many people find more appealing. It has over 10 miles of fine golden sand, completely protected from development as one of the few remaining nesting sites in the Mediterranean of the loggerhead turtle.
Calis is a dolmus bus away from Uzumlu, ?t's a seaside resort with shops, restaurants and is famous for it sunset.
