About this location
The Turkish Aegean Coast region
The Turquoise Coast offers the most spectacular vacations in the Mediterranean ,it is scenically beautiful with an astonishingly rich legacy of archeological ruins and historic sites. The bustling town and harbour of Fethiye is 18klms away from Uzumlu from here you can hire boats or join a group trip to sail to the 12 islands a must if you are in the area. There is a coulourful market on a Tuesday and in the centre of Fethiye there is a bazaar with interesting shops and resturants. The world famous resort of Olu Deniz ( Blue Lagoon)one of the most photographed resorts in Turkey lies a short distance from Fethiye. The beach is a conservation area although their are areas set aside for bathing etc.In October each year Babadag (Father ) mountain that towers over Olu Deniz is home to the starting point of the paragliding festival which is classed as the best site for paragliding in Europe.
Hisaronu and Ovacik lie close by in the hills beside OluDeniz and are bustling with holiday makers .
A few kilometres further and you will come across Kayakoy a ghost town now preserved as a museum , 500 Greek style houses and churches were left abandoned during the population exchange agreement in 1923 between the Greek and Turkish Governments.Kayakoy has been adopted by Unesco as a world friendship and peace village.
Uzumlu ( meaning grape yard or place of grape) is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty on a plateau 500m above sea level surrounded by pine clad mountains. The summer temperatures are more pleasant and not as humid as the coastal resorts in this area.
To visit Uzumlu is to get a taste of the real Turkey where you will enjoy the hospitality of the locals and experience rural life.
The village has a bakery ,post office and a few small supermarkets where you can get everything you need .There are plenty of small restaurants and there is a weekly Friday market where you can buy local produce.
There is an active weaving industry and items are sold in the village centre.
Perched above the village lies the ancient Roman/Lycian city of Cadianda with monuments dating back from the 5th century B.C.Visitors to Cadianda can experience the ruins and enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.
This is an ideal location for people who want to combine rural life with the nearby convenience of modern town life in Fethiye and an ideal base from which to make day excursions to the many attractions within the area.
