The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
If you visit Turkey you will be truly amazed by some of the most impressive scenery Europe has to offer. Blue turquoise seas, endless golden sunny beaches, bathed in sunshine for nearly 300 days a year and local Turkish hospitality that is second to none.
If you want more than sun and beautiful beaches the Turquoise Coast has plenty of activities to offer. For those feeling adventurous Turkey has become the number one destination for paragliding enthusiasts and Oludeniz on the Turquoise Coast is the place to go. Tandem flights are offered at Oludeniz, so you don't need to be a para glider pilot to enjoy this experience.
Turkey is also a paradise for walkers, the Lycian way is a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast and mountains, starting from Fethiye and finishing in Antalya and is one of the most popular routes for walking holidays.
Turkey offers many other activities including, horse riding, wind surfing, kite surfing, water skiing, and paracending.
The Uzumlu area
Uzumlu (meaning grape yard or place of grape) is located on a plateau which it shares with the neighbouring village of Yrncirkoy (meaning fig). It remains an unspoilt working village where its inhabitants depend on agriculture and traditional crafts for their income. The locals use the land to make their living and produce includes olive oil, tobacco, figs, wine, grape juice and vinegar. You will see fields of cotton, aniseed, wheat, barley and summer vegetables, and on the lower slopes apples, pomegranates, almonds and pears are grown. Being 500 metres above sea level the summer night time temperatures are very pleasant and not as humid as down by the coast. It is very pretty in May as there are an abundance of wild flowers and in the winter there is a large variety of birds.
A traditional Turkish village where life continues at a leisurely pace and where little has changed for centuries. Here you will discover the "real Turkey", enjoy the hospitality of the local Turkish people and experience the enchantment of rural life where you will hear nightingales singing from their perches, cowbells ringing in the distance, a braying donkey and the passing herd of goats while tortoises amble along the road.
Uzumlu village boasts a Post Office, school, jandarma (police) station and a couple of small shops for your daily needs. There is a market every Friday where you can buy fresh produce and mingle with the locals who will make you very welcome.
The heart of the village is the square with its tea house which is the centre of village life. The winding streets are lined with wooden balconies overhanging the street and doors and window frames, painted in rich and bright colours are attractively weathered by the long, hot summers.
Pop into the recently opened wine bar in the village and try some of the local restaurants - you won't be disappointed. One of our favourite restaurants is the Cadianda on the main road just before the village.
What comes into the palm of women of every age from fifteen to eighty-five as cotton or silk thread, leaves it as 'dastar', the specific fabric of Uzumlu. Dastar has many uses: beautiful head scarves, curtains, bed covers and even clothes which are often sold to tourists. Between the hands that flutter upon the loom, something like a magical spell happens. The sound heard in the street is the song of the thread.

Hi Ben, we have just arrived back from our 3rd stay at your fantastic villa and are booking for next year same time!!! The villa is in a lovely spot in Uzumlu, the restaurants in the village are lovely, plenty of choice but 'Eddy's place' being our favourite. Caddianda village shop stocks everything you need. A car is recommended, which we had, so we got out to see some beautiful parts of Turkey. Cant wait for next year, Alison and Paul Jackson |
